The route from Geneva to Cannes
From Geneva the drive enters France and heads south. One option goes through Grenoble and then down through the Alpine foothills towards Provence; the other follows the motorway down the Rhône valley via Lyon and Avignon, then east along the A8 towards Nice. Both routes reach the Riviera after five and a half hours or so, and your chauffeur picks the most suitable one for the day's traffic. Summer weekends and major event weeks bring heavy traffic on the A8 and around Cannes itself, so it helps to allow a margin. In winter, the more Alpine route may be avoided if snow is forecast.
What Cannes is known for
The Boulevard de la Croisette curves along the bay, lined with palm trees, grand hotels, boutiques and private beaches. At its western end stands the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, home of the international film festival and many other events through the year, with its red-carpeted steps and the handprints of film stars set in the pavement nearby. Beyond the old harbour, the hill of Le Suquet is the original village, with steep lanes, a castle housing a museum of world cultures, and views over the bay and the Esterel hills.
A short boat ride from the old port takes you to the Lérins islands. Sainte-Marguerite, covered in pine and eucalyptus woods, has the Fort Royal, where the Man in the Iron Mask was famously held. Saint-Honorat is home to a working monastery whose monks produce wine, and its quiet paths are a world away from the Croisette. Back in town, the covered Forville market sells Provençal produce, and the Rue d'Antibes, one street back from the sea, is the main shopping street.
Neighbourhoods and business stays
The Croisette and the streets just behind it are the obvious choice for conference attendees, as the Palais is within walking distance. The area around the old port and Le Suquet has more character and restaurants. The Californie and Croix-des-Gardes hills, with villas and views, are quieter residential districts. For larger groups or longer stays, villas in Mougins, Le Cannet or the hills behind the coast are popular. Cannes hosts a series of international professional events in fields such as property, television and luxury retail, and during these weeks rooms across the area are in high demand.
Day trips along the Riviera
Grasse, in the hills above Cannes, is the historic centre of French perfume-making, with museums and factories explaining the craft. Mougins, a hilltop village, is known for its art galleries and restaurants. Antibes, just east, combines a walled old town with the Picasso Museum, while Nice, with its Promenade des Anglais and Old Town, is under an hour away. The red porphyry cliffs of the Esterel massif, west of Cannes, make a dramatic coastal drive towards Saint-Raphaël. Monaco is also within reach for a longer outing, and the perched village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, long popular with painters, combines well with a visit to Grasse or Antibes.
Practical tips
- Avoid planning a leisure stay during major festival or congress weeks unless you are attending.
- Many beaches along the Croisette are private; public beaches are found at either end of the bay.
- Boats to the Lérins islands leave from the old port.
- Evenings on the Croisette can be dressy, especially in event season.
