Driving from Geneva to Antibes

The route heads into France and south either through Grenoble and the Alpine foothills or down the Rhône valley via Lyon, joining the A8 coastal motorway in Provence and leaving it at the Antibes exit. Allow close to six hours with a break. Traffic on the A8 between Fréjus and Nice can be heavy on summer weekends and during large events in Cannes and Monaco, so timing the departure from Geneva well makes a real difference. For a villa on the Cap, give the chauffeur the precise address, as some private roads have gates or narrow access.

The old town, harbour and Picasso

Antibes was founded by Greek traders as Antipolis, and its old town still sits behind sea walls rebuilt in the seventeenth century under Vauban. Within them, narrow lanes lead to the Provençal market, a covered market hall where stalls sell olives, cheese, flowers and local produce in the mornings. On the ramparts above the sea stands the Château Grimaldi, where Pablo Picasso worked for a few months in 1946. It is now the Picasso Museum, displaying works he created there along with pieces by other modern artists, and its terrace overlooks the Mediterranean.

Port Vauban is one of the largest marinas in the Mediterranean and is well known for the very large yachts moored along its quay. Overlooking the harbour, the star-shaped Fort Carré was strengthened by Vauban and can be visited. Nearby, a large sculpture of a seated figure made of letters, by Jaume Plensa, faces the sea and has become a local landmark.

Cap d'Antibes and Juan-les-Pins

South of the town, the Cap d'Antibes is a peninsula of pines, gardens and grand villas. The coastal path known as the Sentier du Littoral, also called the Tire-Poil, follows the rocky shoreline at the tip of the Cap and is one of the most rewarding walks on the Riviera; wear proper shoes as parts are uneven. The Garoupe lighthouse and chapel on the hill offer wide views from the Alps to the Esterel. On the western side of the Cap, Juan-les-Pins is a beach resort with a sandy bay and a lively summer atmosphere, home to a long-running jazz festival held in a pine grove near the sea. It was a favourite haunt of the Jazz Age set in the 1920s.

Where to stay and the business angle

The old town suits visitors who want to walk everywhere and enjoy evenings in its squares. Juan-les-Pins is livelier, especially in summer, with beaches close at hand. The Cap offers villas and a calmer, greener setting, while the hills behind the coast have more space and pools for families. Business travellers often come for Sophia Antipolis, the large technology park in the hills between Antibes and Valbonne, home to many international companies and research centres. A chauffeur by the hour, booked for at least two hours, is useful for a day of meetings around the park and the coast.

Day trips

Biot, a hill village just inland, is known for its bubble glass workshops and the Fernand Léger Museum. Saint-Paul-de-Vence, a fortified village that drew many painters, hosts the Maeght Foundation in the woods nearby. Cannes and Nice are both short drives away, and Grasse, centre of the perfume industry, lies in the hills. Further east, Villefranche-sur-Mer and Monaco make a beautiful coastal outing.
