Burgundy and Lyon: a gourmet road trip from Geneva

A food-and-wine itinerary from Geneva through Bresse, the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, ending in Lyon, France's gastronomic capital.

A gourmet loop from Geneva Airport through Burgundy's wine villages and back via Lyon (150 km from GVA, about 1 h 45) fits neatly into four or five days and puts some of France's most celebrated food and wine within easy reach. With a chauffeur from AirportsTransfers.ch, everyone in the group can taste freely while somebody else handles the driving.

  • Route: Geneva, Bresse, Mâconnais, Beaune, Côte de Nuits, Dijon, then south to Lyon
  • Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France
  • Time to allow: four to five days, with two nights around Beaune and two in Lyon
  • Best season: spring and autumn; the harvest period in September is lively
  • Why a chauffeur: wine tastings, small country lanes and luggage that grows with every cellar visit

From Geneva into Bresse and the Mâconnais

Leaving the airport, the motorway heads west into France across the Ain. A worthwhile first stop is Bresse, a farming region famous for its poultry, the only chicken in France with its own protected designation of origin. Bourg-en-Bresse also has the Royal Monastery of Brou, a flamboyant Gothic church with remarkable carved tombs. Continuing west, you reach the Saône and the Mâconnais, the southern end of Burgundy, where white wines from villages such as Pouilly-Fuissé are made beneath the striking limestone Rock of Solutré.

From here, the road north follows the Saône valley towards the Côte Chalonnaise and on to Beaune, the wine capital of Burgundy.

Beaune and the Côte de Beaune

Beaune is a compact walled town that is easy to explore on foot. Its best-known monument is the Hôtel-Dieu, the medieval hospital of the Hospices de Beaune, instantly recognisable by its roof of glazed, multicoloured tiles. The town is full of wine merchants and cellars, and makes the ideal base for two or three nights.

Just south lie the villages that make up the Côte de Beaune: Pommard and Volnay for reds, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet for some of the world's most sought-after white wines. The vineyards, divided into hundreds of small named plots known as climats, are recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Many family domaines receive visitors by appointment, so it is worth arranging tastings ahead and sharing the plan with your chauffeur, who can link them efficiently along the narrow lanes between the villages.

Côte de Nuits and Dijon

North of Beaune, the Côte de Nuits is the heartland of Burgundy's great Pinot Noir. The Route des Grands Crus passes through Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot, with its walled vineyard and château of Clos de Vougeot, Chambolle-Musigny and Gevrey-Chambertin. A slow drive along this route, stopping for a tasting or two and a lunch of jambon persillé or boeuf bourguignon, is the essence of the trip.

The route ends at Dijon, the former capital of the Dukes of Burgundy, with its ducal palace, half-timbered houses and a reputation for mustard, gingerbread and cassis. It is an easy half-day or overnight stop before turning south.

Lyon: bouchons, markets and old town

The motorway from Dijon to Lyon runs down the Saône valley, passing the Beaujolais hills on the way; a detour into one of its stone villages adds another style of wine to the tasting notes. Lyon is often described as the gastronomic capital of France. Its traditional bouchons serve hearty Lyonnais dishes such as quenelles, saucisson and praline tart, and the covered food hall named after the city's most famous chef is a showcase of regional produce.

Beyond the table, Lyon's historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Vieux Lyon, at the foot of Fourvière hill, is full of Renaissance houses and hidden passageways called traboules, while the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière and the Roman theatres overlook the city. The Presqu'île between the Rhône and the Saône has the grand squares and shopping streets. From Lyon, the return to Geneva Airport takes about 1 h 45.

Tips for a wine-focused trip

  • Many domaines are small family estates: book tastings in advance and keep the number per day reasonable.
  • Ask about shipping cases home, or plan vehicle space: a Mercedes V-Class van carries up to 10 bags.
  • Sunday and Monday closures are common in rural France; plan restaurant meals accordingly.
  • Avoid peak harvest days if you want unhurried visits with winemakers.

Arranging your chauffeur

Book the trip as individual transfers or as a chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours) with AirportsTransfers.ch. The price is fixed per vehicle and shown before you confirm, with payment online by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Your chauffeur greets you at Geneva Airport with a name sign and tracks your flight, so a late arrival does not cost you the first afternoon. Companies receive invoices on request, which makes this format popular for client trips and team incentives, and child seats are supplied when requested.
