Golden larches: autumn walks in the Engadin and Valais

Why larch forests turn gold each autumn, where to walk among them in the Engadin and Valais, and how to time a larch trip from Geneva Airport.

Each October the larch forests of the Engadin and Valais turn from green to brilliant gold, lighting up the mountainsides for a few short weeks before the needles fall. From Geneva Airport, the Valais larches around Verbier or Zermatt are 2 to 2 h 35 away by road, while the Engadin around St. Moritz is about 400 km and 5 h, and AirportsTransfers.ch can drive you to either for a stay timed to the colours.

  • Why gold: the larch is a conifer that sheds its needles every autumn
  • Peak period: usually around mid to late October, varying with altitude and weather
  • Engadin walks: Val Fex, Val Roseg and the lakes of Sils and Silvaplana
  • Valais walks: around Zermatt, Verbier, Crans-Montana and the side valleys
  • Getting there: door-to-door transfers from GVA, Täsch for car-free Zermatt

The larch: a conifer that changes colour

Most mountain conifers stay green all winter, but the European larch is an exception. It sheds its soft needles every year, and before it does, the needles turn yellow, then a deep gold or orange. Larches thrive high in the Alps, often forming open, light-filled forests up to the treeline, mixed with Arolla pines and spruce. When the larches turn, whole hillsides glow against the dark evergreens, blue skies and the first dustings of snow on the summits.

The colour is short-lived. Depending on the year, the display lasts from about two to four weeks, usually starting at higher altitudes and moving down the slopes. A sunny autumn with cold nights gives the most intense colour, while early snow or a storm can strip the trees quickly. This unpredictability is part of the magic, and it pays to keep travel plans a little flexible.

The Engadin: lakes ringed with gold

The Upper Engadin, the high valley around St. Moritz, is perhaps the most celebrated larch landscape in Switzerland. Wide, sunny and dry, the valley floor holds a chain of lakes, Sils, Silvaplana, Champfèr and St. Moritz, framed by larch forests on both sides. In autumn the reflections of gold trees and snowy peaks in still water are the defining images of the season.

Classic walks include the path along the shores of Lake Sils, and the gentle valley of Val Fex, closed to private traffic and reached on foot or by horse-drawn carriage from Sils Maria. Val Roseg, near Pontresina, leads towards a glacier through larch and pine forest, with carriages also an option. The Muottas Muragl funicular offers a panoramic view down the length of the lakes. Given the 5-hour drive from Geneva, plan at least three or four nights, ideally midweek when the villages are quiet.

  • Lake Sils shore path: flat and reflective
  • Val Fex: car-free valley from Sils Maria
  • Val Roseg: towards the glacier from Pontresina

Valais: larches above Zermatt, Verbier and the side valleys

Valais has larches in almost every high valley. Around Zermatt, the forests between the village and the high pastures turn gold below the Matterhorn, and walks between hamlets of dark timber chalets are especially photogenic. Zermatt is car-free, so transfers stop at Täsch, 231 km and about 2 h 35 from GVA, with a shuttle train for the last stretch. Verbier, around 160 km and 2 h away, has larch-lined paths along irrigation channels and towards the high lakes, while Crans-Montana, about 190 km and 2 h 15 from Geneva, mixes larches with views across the Rhône valley.

The quieter side valleys, Val d'Hérens, Val d'Anniviers and the Lötschental among them, have traditional villages, ancient larch woods and far fewer visitors. The Aletsch forest above the Aletsch glacier is known for its old larches and Arolla pines. Many mountain lifts close between the summer and winter seasons, so check whether the one you want to use is running in October, or choose walks that start from the villages.

Planning a larch walking trip

Timing is everything. Larches generally peak around mid to late October, but it shifts year by year, so follow local tourist office updates and book flexible accommodation if possible. Some hotels close between seasons, especially in Valais resorts, so check that your chosen village is open.

Autumn walking is comfortable: cool mornings, mild afternoons, little crowding. Bring layers, a hat and gloves for frosty starts, sunglasses for the bright light, and good boots, as shady paths can be icy. Days are shorter than in summer, so plan to be back before dusk. For photographers, the low autumn sun at the beginning and end of the day gives the warmest light on the trees.
