Some of Europe's best-known adventure sports hubs are within easy reach of Geneva: Annecy, 44 km and 40 minutes away, is a paragliding hotspot above its lake, Chamonix, at 90 km and 1 h 15, is a mountain sports capital, and Verbier and Interlaken offer canyoning, rafting and tandem flights. AirportsTransfers.ch gets you from the airport to these hubs directly, so a tandem flight or canyon trip can fill your first full day.

Paragliding over lakes and glaciers
Tandem paragliding is the easiest way to experience flight in the Alps: you fly with a qualified pilot, no previous experience needed, after a short briefing and a few running steps from the take-off. Annecy is among the most famous sites in Europe, with launches above the eastern shore and the turquoise lake spread below. Chamonix offers flights in front of the Mont Blanc massif, with take-offs reached by lift, which makes the views extraordinary.
In Switzerland, Verbier has tandem flights from its high slopes over the Val de Bagnes, while Interlaken, between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, is a long-established centre where paragliders land in the middle of town. Flights depend on the weather and wind, so keep your schedule flexible and book with a recognised school, which will reschedule if conditions are not right.
Canyoning, rafting and water sports
Canyoning involves descending a mountain stream by sliding down natural rock chutes, abseiling beside waterfalls and jumping into pools, wearing a wetsuit and helmet with a guide. The limestone gorges of Haute-Savoie, within a short drive of Annecy, are popular, as are canyons in Valais, Ticino and the Bernese Oberland. Many routes have beginner versions suitable for teenagers and first-timers, while advanced descents demand fitness and a head for heights.
Whitewater rafting takes place on glacier-fed rivers that run high in early summer. The Dranse near Lake Geneva, rivers in Valais and the Lütschine near Interlaken are well-known options. On calmer water, stand-up paddleboarding, wakeboarding and sailing are available on Lake Geneva, Lake Annecy and the Engadin lakes.

Via ferratas, climbing and mountain experiences
Via ferratas are protected climbing routes equipped with steel cables, ladders and bridges, allowing non-climbers to reach dramatic terrain with a harness and lanyards. Many resorts in Haute-Savoie, Valais and the Vaud Alps have routes ranging from family-friendly to very exposed. Chamonix is also the place to try rock climbing, glacier walks or an introduction to mountaineering with a certified guide, while Zermatt is a classic base for guided high-altitude ascents.
Other activities include zip lines, summer bobsleigh-style toboggan runs, bungee jumping from dam walls and bridges, and skydiving in certain valleys. Interlaken in particular brings many of these together, which makes it a natural destination for a short adventure-packed stay, though it is further from Geneva than Annecy or Chamonix.
Choosing a hub and planning the trip
For a quick escape, Annecy combines adventure with a beautiful old town and lake beaches; it is close enough for a long weekend. Chamonix suits those who want high mountains and a lively atmosphere. Verbier, about 2 h from GVA, offers flights, biking and hiking from one base. Interlaken requires a longer drive but packs the widest range of activities into one place.
Always book with licensed operators and qualified guides, follow their equipment and safety advice, and check that your travel insurance covers adventure sports. Many activities have minimum ages or weight limits, so check before promising children a flight or canyon.
