Autumn colours in Switzerland arrive in stages, from the golden vineyards of Lavaux, around 61 km from Geneva Airport near Lausanne, to the larch forests of Valais and the Engadin, which glow orange and gold in October. AirportsTransfers.ch can plan a day or a few days around these landscapes, from a short trip along the lake to a longer journey east to St. Moritz, about 400 km and 5 h by road.
- Vineyards: Lavaux terraces between Lausanne and Montreux turn gold after the harvest
- Larches: Valais valleys and the Engadin glow orange from about mid-October
- Forests: the Jura beech woods and Ticino chestnuts add reds and browns
- Best timing: generally late September to early November, depending on altitude
- Getting there: private transfers from GVA, or a chauffeur by the hour for scenic drives
Lavaux: vineyard terraces above Lake Geneva
Lavaux is a steep sweep of stone-walled vineyard terraces dropping to Lake Geneva between Lausanne and Montreux. Listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, it is beautiful in every season but particularly in autumn, when the harvest is over and the vine leaves turn yellow, amber and rust above the blue lake, with the mountains of Savoie across the water. Villages such as Cully, Epesses, Rivaz, Saint-Saphorin and Chexbres invite slow walking between cellars.
Lavaux is close to Geneva: Lausanne is about 45 minutes from the airport and Montreux about 1 h 05. A chauffeur can drop you at one village and collect you at another after a walk along the terraces, with a tasting of Chasselas, the region's signature white wine, along the way. In early autumn there is the extra spectacle of the grape harvest.
Valais: larches, vineyards and high valleys
Valais offers some of the most vivid autumn scenery in the Alps. On the sunny slopes of the Rhône valley, vineyards turn gold and red after the harvest. Higher up, the larch forests take over. The larch is a conifer that sheds its needles each autumn, and before they fall, the trees blaze yellow and orange against dark spruce and early snow on the peaks. Around Zermatt, the Val d'Hérens, the Val d'Anniviers and the slopes above Crans-Montana and Verbier, walks in mid to late October can be spectacular.
Zermatt is reached via Täsch, 231 km and about 2 h 35 from GVA, with a shuttle train into the car-free village; Crans-Montana is about 190 km and 2 h 15 away, Verbier 160 km and 2 h. Many lifts close between the summer and winter seasons, so check which ones run before planning higher walks.
The Engadin and other regions
In the far east of Switzerland, the Upper Engadin is famous for its autumn larches. The valley around St. Moritz, Sils and Silvaplana is lined with larch forests that turn bright gold, reflected in the lakes under clear, dry autumn light. Side valleys such as Val Fex and Val Roseg are popular walks or carriage rides. The Engadin is a long drive from Geneva, about 5 h, so it works best as a stay of several days.
Closer to home, the Jura mountains west of Geneva are covered in beech and maple forests that turn russet and red, with views over the lake towards the Alps. In Ticino, south of the Alps, chestnut woods turn bronze and chestnut festivals take place in villages, though this is a long journey from Geneva and suits a longer trip.
- Lavaux: close, vineyard gold above the lake
- Valais: larches above Zermatt, Verbier and Crans-Montana
- Engadin: lakes ringed by golden larches
- Jura and Ticino: beech and chestnut forests
When to go and planning tips
Colours depend on altitude and weather. Larches at higher elevations usually peak around mid-October, while vineyards and lower forests follow later in the month and into early November. A sunny, dry autumn produces the most intense colours, while an early snowfall or strong wind can end the display quickly. Keep plans flexible and watch local reports.
Autumn is a shoulder season, so some mountain hotels and lifts close for a few weeks. That brings quieter villages, but also fewer options; check before booking. Days are shorter, so start early. Pack layers: mornings can be frosty at altitude, while afternoons in the vineyards can still be warm.
