The small capital of the Vaud Chablais is surrounded by vineyards, crowned by a picturesque castle that houses a wine museum, and is home to the world governing body of cycling. Getting from Geneva Airport to Aigle
The route follows the lake on the A1 to Lausanne and then the A9 past Vevey and Montreux, before entering the broad Rhône valley at Villeneuve. Aigle has its own motorway exit. Delays mainly occur around Lausanne at rush hour and, in winter, on Saturdays when skiers head for the resorts of the Alpes vaudoises and the Valais.
Aigle is on the main Simplon railway line and is a hub for three mountain railways climbing to Leysin, Les Diablerets and Champéry via Monthey. Trains from Geneva are frequent but usually require a change. For skiers, cyclists with bike boxes or families, a private transfer avoids carrying bags between platforms.
The castle and the wine of the Chablais
Aigle Castle, with its turrets and crenellated walls standing among the vines, is one of the emblematic images of the canton of Vaud. It houses a museum devoted to vines and wine, presenting the history of winemaking, tools and traditions of the region. Across the square, the Maison de la Dîme holds collections on wine labels and etiquette. The vineyards around the town produce mainly Chasselas, and the Chablais wines are appreciated for their mineral character. Local cellars offer tastings, and the wine trail through the surrounding villages makes a pleasant walk.
The old town has a charming covered street, the Rue de Jérusalem, with wooden galleries overhanging the houses.
Cycling capital
Aigle hosts the headquarters of the International Cycling Union and its World Cycling Centre, which includes a velodrome and training facilities for athletes from around the world. Cyclists come here to ride the flat Rhône valley roads and the mountain climbs above, including the roads to Leysin, the Col des Mosses and Villars. Visitors with bikes should declare them at booking so a suitable vehicle is sent.
The town also makes a natural starting point for road cyclists exploring the Vaud Alps and the Valais. Professional teams and national squads train here regularly, and amateur riders appreciate the variety of terrain within a short radius: flat valley loops, long climbs and quiet back roads through the vineyards. Many places to stay in the area are used to welcoming cyclists and can store bikes securely overnight.
Gateway to the Alpes vaudoises
- Leysin: a sunny resort on a terrace above Aigle, with international schools and skiing
- Les Diablerets: a mountain village at the foot of the Glacier 3000 area
- Villars-sur-Ollon: a family resort linked to Gryon and Les Diablerets
- Champéry and the Portes du Soleil: reached via Monthey
Many visitors stay in Aigle to enjoy lower prices and valley amenities while making daily trips to the resorts, or use it as a stop on the way to the mountains. In summer, the Rhône valley offers flat cycle paths, and the nearby Chablais villages have hiking trails through the vines. The salt mines of Bex, a short drive south, offer guided underground visits through historic galleries.
Practical tips
The Rhône valley can be windy and warm in summer, and the vineyards are steep, so wear comfortable shoes for walking. If you are continuing to a ski resort, check whether your accommodation requires chains or a vehicle with winter tyres on the final road; the driver will be equipped for the conditions. For an early flight from Geneva, plan for the motorway around Lausanne and allow a margin in winter.
