Aigle
Aigle is about 110 km from Geneva Airport, around 1 hour 15 minutes by road, where the Rhône valley opens out above the eastern end of Lake Geneva. It sits on the main railway line, so rail is a practical option for light travellers, while a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is more convenient for heavy luggage, groups, odd-hour flights and onward journeys to the nearby mountain resorts.

Why people travel to Aigle
Aigle is the main town of the Chablais vaudois, a wine-growing area of terraced vineyards known for its Chasselas white wines. Its most recognisable sight is the Château d'Aigle, a turreted castle among the vines that houses a museum of wine and viticulture. The town is also home to the World Cycling Centre of the UCI, the international cycling federation, which brings athletes, coaches and officials from around the world. Many travellers, though, are just passing through: Aigle is the starting point of mountain railways and roads that climb to Leysin, Les Diablerets and the Villars area, and it is close to the boarding schools and clinics scattered across these slopes. Your best choice of transport depends a lot on whether Aigle is your destination or a stepping stone.
The train: a genuine option
Trains from the station beneath the Geneva Airport terminal run along the shore of Lake Geneva and on into the Rhône valley. Depending on the service you can travel through to Aigle or change at Lausanne for a train that continues up the valley. The journey is comfortable and very scenic, passing the Lavaux vineyards and the Riviera before reaching the Chablais. From Aigle station, narrow-gauge mountain lines head up to Leysin and Les Diablerets, while Villars is reached via Bex. If you are a single traveller or a couple with modest luggage, arriving during the day and staying near the station, the train is an excellent choice. It becomes less convenient when you add a change, a second train up the mountain and a walk to your accommodation at the end, all with large bags.
Cyclists, students and bulky luggage
Visitors to the World Cycling Centre often travel with bike boxes, and students heading to schools above Aigle arrive with luggage for a whole term. Neither travels easily on two or three trains. A private vehicle takes everything in one go: a Mercedes V-Class van carries up to seven passengers and ten bags, and bulky items such as bike boxes or skis can be declared at booking so the right space is reserved. The chauffeur meets you in arrivals and unloads at the exact address, whether in Aigle itself or further up the mountain in Leysin, Les Diablerets or Villars.
Groups, delegations and the cost per head
Rail fares are per person; a private transfer is a fixed price per vehicle. A solo traveller will usually find the train cheaper. A team of cyclists, a delegation attending a meeting, or a family of four sharing one vehicle will find the per-person cost closer, especially once you add the mountain railway on top. For larger parties, a Mercedes Sprinter minibus keeps everyone together, and companies and federations can receive invoices. A chauffeur by the hour, with a two-hour minimum, is useful for visitors with several appointments in the valley on the same day.
Timing and the final verdict
Late arrivals are the weak point of rail: the last connections up the valley and into the mountains come earlier than many evening flights. A private car is timed to your actual landing, with the chauffeur tracking the flight and waiting included if you are delayed, and it can pick you up at dawn for an early departure. In short, take the train if you are travelling light to central Aigle at a convenient hour; book a car for bulky luggage, groups, children, late or early flights, or for continuing straight to a mountain resort without changing at Aigle.
