Estavayer-le-Lac

Estavayer-le-Lac is 107 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by car via the A1 motorway past Lausanne and Yverdon, without leaving Switzerland. This small town in the canton of Fribourg sits on the south-eastern shore of Lake Neuchâtel and is known for its medieval centre, its castle and its long beaches and reedbeds. AirportsTransfers.ch offers door-to-door transfers that avoid the changes needed by public transport.

  • Distance from GVA: 107 km
  • Drive time: about 1 h 15
  • Border crossing: none, Switzerland only
  • Best for: lakeside holidays, families, water sports, medieval architecture
  • Getting there: A1 via Lausanne and Yverdon

From Geneva Airport to Estavayer-le-Lac

The car takes the A1 along Lake Geneva, then turns north past Lausanne towards Yverdon and continues along the motorway that runs through the Broye countryside. Estavayer is reached from its own exit, a short drive down to the lake. Apart from the Lausanne area at rush hour, traffic is light. The journey is straightforward and passes through some of the quietest farming landscapes of western Switzerland.

Rail connections exist but generally involve a change at Yverdon or elsewhere, and the station is a short walk from the old town. For families with beach gear, campers with bags or groups heading to the water sports centres, the private car is simpler.

The medieval town

Estavayer-le-Lac is often called the city of roses, and its old town is a remarkably well-preserved medieval centre, with ramparts, gates, narrow streets and houses dating back several centuries. The Château de Chenaux, a fine example of medieval military architecture with brick towers, now houses the prefecture. The collegiate church of Saint-Laurent, with its Gothic architecture and carved choir stalls, rises above the rooftops.

An unusual local museum displays a historic collection of stuffed frogs arranged in humorous scenes of nineteenth-century daily life, alongside more conventional displays of local history. It is a curious and memorable visit, popular with children.

Beaches, water sports and nature

Estavayer's lakeshore is lined with beaches, a large harbour and a campsite, and the shallow, warm water makes it popular with families in summer. Water-skiing, wakeboarding, sailing and paddleboarding are widely practised, and a cable park allows wakeboarding without a boat. On either side of the town stretches the Grande Cariçaie, the largest lakeshore wetland in Switzerland, a protected reserve of reeds, forests and lagoons that shelters many bird species. Observation towers and paths let you explore part of it without disturbing the wildlife.

Cycling is another highlight: the flat lakeside roads and the gentle countryside of the Broye are ideal for leisurely rides, and national cycle routes pass through the area.

Day trips from Estavayer

  • Payerne: a Romanesque abbey church, one of the most important in Switzerland
  • Avenches: the former Roman capital of Helvetia, with an amphitheatre and museum
  • Murten / Morat: a walled town on its own lake
  • Neuchâtel: across the lake, with its castle and yellow-stone old town

Boats cross the lake in summer, linking Estavayer to Neuchâtel and other ports, a pleasant way to combine a day on the water with sightseeing. Yverdon and its thermal baths are also close.

Practical tips for your stay

The town is busiest in July and August, especially at weekends when the beaches fill with visitors from across Romandy. Accommodation includes small hotels in the old town, guest rooms and the large campsite on the lakeshore. Many restaurants serve lake fish such as perch and féra, as well as specialities from the Fribourg region, like moitié-moitié fondue and meringues with double cream. If you are travelling with water sports equipment, check the dimensions when booking so the right vehicle is sent.
