Portofino
Portofino is 422 km from Geneva Airport, about 4 hours 40 minutes by road through the Alps, Piedmont and Genoa to the tip of the Portofino headland on the Italian Riviera. Access is by a single narrow coastal road and parking is very limited, so arriving with AirportsTransfers.ch, whose chauffeur drops you off and leaves, is often easier than bringing a car.

Getting to Portofino from Geneva Airport
The drive usually goes through the Mont Blanc Tunnel and the Aosta Valley, across Piedmont and over the Apennines to Genoa, then east along the coastal motorway to Rapallo and Santa Margherita Ligure. From there, a narrow road clings to the cliffs for the last few kilometres to Portofino. It is a beautiful stretch, but it can be slow in summer, when traffic queues to enter the village. Your chauffeur will time the arrival and coordinate the drop-off as close as possible to your hotel.
There is no railway station in Portofino. Rail travellers take the train to Santa Margherita Ligure, after changes in Milan or Turin and Genoa, then continue by bus, taxi or boat. With luggage, a direct transfer simplifies the trip considerably.
The harbour and the piazzetta
Portofino is tiny: a horseshoe-shaped harbour surrounded by tall, narrow houses painted in ochre, pink and yellow, with green shutters and a small square, the piazzetta, opening onto the water. Fishing boats, tenders and yachts share the harbour, and cafes and boutiques line the waterfront. Its appearance has made it one of the most photographed villages in Italy and a byword for Riviera elegance.
The village is at its most charming in the early morning and evening, when day visitors have left and the harbour is calm. In high summer, the piazzetta is busy, and the bay fills with yachts at anchor.
Eating in Portofino follows the Ligurian tradition: trofie with pesto, focaccia, fish of the day and simple seafood dishes, often served on terraces facing the boats. Prices and demand are high in season, so reserving a table for the evening is sensible, especially at weekends.
Walks, the castle and the lighthouse
A short climb from the harbour leads to the Church of San Giorgio, with views over the village and the sea. Continuing upwards, Castello Brown, a fortress later transformed into a private residence, now welcomes visitors to its rooms and gardens with sweeping views of the Gulf of Tigullio. Beyond it, the path continues to the lighthouse at Punta del Capo, where the open sea stretches to the horizon.
The headland around Portofino is a regional park and the waters off it are a protected marine area, popular for diving and snorkelling. Footpaths through pines, holm oaks and olive groves link Portofino to San Fruttuoso, a medieval abbey in a cove reachable only on foot or by boat, and onwards to Camogli. The walks are rewarding but involve steep sections, so proper shoes are essential.
Where to stay and boat trips
Accommodation in Portofino itself is limited, and many visitors stay in Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo or Camogli and come to Portofino by boat or on foot. Boats run along the coast in the warmer months, linking Portofino with Santa Margherita, Rapallo, San Fruttuoso and, on some routes, the Cinque Terre. Private boat hire is a classic way to see the coast from the water.
A chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours) is useful for evenings out in neighbouring towns or day trips to Genoa, where a car can be more convenient than coastal trains.
