Driving from Geneva Airport to Baden-Baden

The route follows Swiss motorways from Geneva towards Basel, then crosses into Germany and runs north along the Rhine plain, with the forested slopes of the Black Forest on one side and the Vosges across the river on the other. The motorway is fast, and the main congestion points are around Basel and on busy holiday weekends. Your chauffeur can propose a short break at a service area halfway.

By train, the trip from Geneva usually requires a change at Basel and sometimes another before the local connection, and Baden-Baden's station lies some distance from the spa quarter. A private transfer drops you directly at the entrance of your hotel, which is welcome after a flight, especially with luggage or evening wear for a concert.

The spa town

Baden-Baden owes its fame to its hot springs, already used by the Romans, whose bath ruins can still be seen beneath the old town. In the nineteenth century, it became one of Europe's most fashionable resorts, visited by royalty, writers and composers, and today it is part of the UNESCO-listed Great Spa Towns of Europe. Two large thermal bathhouses offer contrasting experiences: one a historic Roman-Irish bath with a sequence of hot-air, steam and thermal pools in a nineteenth-century building, the other a modern complex with indoor and outdoor pools and saunas.

The Kurhaus, with its classical columns, is the social heart of the spa quarter and houses the casino, whose ornate rooms are famous in their own right. Opposite, the Trinkhalle, a long pump room with painted murals, recalls the era when guests came to drink the waters. The Lichtentaler Allee, a park avenue along the small Oos river, links the spa district with museums and villas and is a classic place to stroll.

Culture and conferences

For a town of its size, Baden-Baden has a remarkable cultural life. The Festspielhaus, one of Europe's largest opera and concert houses, presents opera, orchestras and ballet, and draws visitors from across the region. Along the Lichtentaler Allee, the Museum Frieder Burda, in a white building designed by Richard Meier, shows modern and contemporary art, and the Kunsthalle next to it holds temporary exhibitions. A theatre and a museum devoted to the town's history complete the picture.

The town also hosts conferences, medical congresses and corporate events, helped by its hotels and congress facilities. AirportsTransfers.ch can provide transfers with company invoices and a chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours) to take guests between events, dinners and excursions.

The Black Forest and wine country

Baden-Baden is the starting point of the Black Forest High Road, a scenic route along the ridges towards Freudenstadt, with viewpoints, lakes such as the Mummelsee and walking trails. Closer to town, a funicular climbs the Merkur hill for views over the valley and the Rhine plain. To the west and south, the vineyards of the Baden wine region cover the slopes, with villages producing Riesling and Pinot wines.

Strasbourg lies across the Rhine within a short drive, and Karlsruhe, with its baroque palace, is close to the north. Further into the Black Forest, traditional villages, farmhouses and cuckoo-clock workshops show another side of the region.

  • Spring and autumn are lovely for walks on the Lichtentaler Allee and in the forest.
  • The Christmas season brings a market to the spa quarter.
  • Book early when major concerts or conferences fill the town.
  • Mountain roads in the Black Forest can be snowy in winter.
