Paris
Paris is 545 km from Geneva Airport, about 5 h 30 by road, crossing the border into France and heading north-west through Burgundy on the motorways. Fast trains also link Geneva with Paris, so the car makes most sense for families, groups, heavy luggage or a trip that combines stops along the way. Road or rail from Geneva to Paris
The motorway route leaves Geneva on the A40, joins the A6 near Mâcon and runs north past Beaune and the vineyards of Burgundy, before the long final run towards the capital. The approach into Paris can be slow at peak times, and your chauffeur will time the arrival to avoid the worst of the traffic where possible.
The high-speed train from Geneva's main station is quicker for a solo traveller with a small bag. A car becomes the better option when you are several people sharing one vehicle, travelling with children, bulky luggage or pets, arriving on a late flight, or going to an address far from the Gare de Lyon. It also allows a stop in Burgundy for lunch or a wine visit on the way.
What Paris is known for
The classic sights hardly need an introduction: the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre with the Mona Lisa, Notre-Dame Cathedral on the Île de la Cité, the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Élysées. The Musée d'Orsay, in a former railway station, holds a major collection of Impressionist art, and the Centre Pompidou focuses on modern art. Sainte-Chapelle is known for its luminous stained glass, and Montmartre, crowned by the Sacré-Cœur basilica, keeps the feel of a village on a hill.
Walking along the Seine, browsing the booksellers on the quays, and spending time in parks such as the Luxembourg Gardens or the Tuileries are as much part of the experience as the museums. French cuisine ranges from bistros and bakeries to pastry shops and markets in every district.
Where to stay in Paris
Paris is divided into twenty arrondissements, spiralling out from the centre. The Marais, in the 3rd and 4th, is historic and lively, with galleries and boutiques. Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the Latin Quarter on the Left Bank have a literary, café-culture character. The 7th, around the Eiffel Tower, is quieter and residential, while the 8th, around the Champs-Élysées, is elegant and business-oriented. Montmartre offers charm and views but involves hills and stairs.
Business travellers often stay near La Défense, the main business district just west of the city, or close to the large exhibition centres at Porte de Versailles and Paris Nord Villepinte. A private transfer takes you directly to these venues.
Day trips from Paris
The Palace of Versailles, with its Hall of Mirrors and vast gardens, is the classic excursion. Giverny, where Claude Monet painted his water lilies, Fontainebleau with its royal château and forest, and Chantilly with its castle and art collection are other favourites. Further afield, Reims and the Champagne region, and the châteaux of the Loire Valley, make longer day trips. A chauffeur booked by the hour, minimum two hours, can take you to these places in comfort.
Practical tips
Paris traffic is dense and parking is scarce, so once you arrive the metro, buses and walking are the easiest ways to get around. Many museums require timed reservations, especially in high season, so book ahead. Spring and autumn are pleasant times to visit, while August is quieter as many Parisians go on holiday.
If you are combining Paris with a stay in the Alps or Geneva, the transfer can be arranged in either direction, and a return trip to Geneva Airport can be booked at the same time. Allow ample time to leave Paris, as the ring road and motorway exits can be congested at peak hours.
