Morges travel guide: a lakeside town 35 minutes from Geneva Airport

Castle, tulips, wine and a lakeside promenade: Morges sits 49 km from Geneva Airport on the Swiss shore. A practical guide for visitors.

Morges

Morges is 49 km from Geneva Airport, about 35 minutes along the A1 motorway, and the trip stays inside Switzerland with no border to cross. This small Vaud town on the shore of Lake Geneva, between Geneva and Lausanne, is known for its castle, its spring tulip displays and the vineyards of La Côte behind it. With AirportsTransfers.ch you go straight from arrivals to the lakefront in a car booked at a fixed price.

  • Distance from GVA: 49 km
  • Drive time: about 35 minutes
  • Border crossing: none, the route stays in Switzerland
  • Best for: short breaks, wine country, a calm base near Lausanne
  • Getting there: motorway A1, or direct trains on the lakeshore line

Getting from GVA to Morges

This is one of the simplest transfers from the airport: the car joins the motorway almost immediately and follows it north-east along the lake, past Nyon and Rolle, leaving at the Morges exits. Outside rush hour the run is quick and predictable. The busiest moments are weekday mornings towards Lausanne and late afternoons back towards Geneva, when the motorway can slow considerably.

Morges also sits on the main Geneva–Lausanne railway, and many trains from the airport station stop there, so a train is perfectly reasonable for a light traveller. A private car makes more sense for families, groups splitting the cost of a van, arrivals after the last convenient train, or anyone staying in a vineyard village above the town that the railway does not serve.

Castle, old town and lakefront

The square castle on the water's edge, built by the House of Savoy in the thirteenth century, is the town's landmark and today houses military museums, including collections of weapons, uniforms and historical figurines. From there the Grand-Rue, a long pedestrian street with arcades and shops, runs parallel to the lake through the old town. The harbour, with its stone breakwaters and moored sailing boats, is a lovely place at sunset, and on clear days the view stretches across to the French Alps and Mont Blanc.

In spring the Parc de l'Indépendance on the waterfront is planted with many thousands of tulips, and the display draws visitors from all over the region. The town also has links with notable residents: the actress Audrey Hepburn lived for decades in the neighbouring village of Tolochenaz, where a small exhibition and her grave can be visited.

Wine country and where to stay

Morges is the eastern gateway to La Côte, one of the main wine regions of the canton of Vaud, where Chasselas dominates and family estates open their cellars for tastings. Villages such as Féchy, Mont-sur-Rolle and Aubonne sit on the slopes above, linked by narrow roads that are much easier with a driver than on public transport, especially if you are tasting. A chauffeur by the hour, for a minimum of two hours, is a sensible way to visit several cellars in an afternoon.

Accommodation in Morges itself is mostly small hotels and short-term rentals; for business travellers it is a quieter alternative to Lausanne, with the EPFL campus and the Lausanne business districts close by along the motorway.

Day trips from Morges

Lausanne, with its cathedral, Olympic Museum and Ouchy waterfront, is about a quarter of an hour away. Further along the lake lie the terraced vineyards of Lavaux and the towns of Vevey and Montreux. Westwards, Nyon has a Roman museum and a lakeside château, while inland the Jura foothills offer walks and the cheese dairies of the Vaud countryside. Lake boats also call at Morges in season, making a relaxed way to reach other ports.

Families might head for the small lakeside beaches and swimming areas along the shore in summer, or for the arboretum in the Aubonne valley, a large collection of trees from around the world set in rolling countryside. Further afield, the Vallée de Joux, cradle of Swiss high watchmaking, lies over the first Jura ridge and has a calm lake, cross-country ski trails in winter and watchmaking exhibitions. In autumn, the grape harvest brings activity to every village on the slopes, and many estates sell their new wines directly from the cellar door.
