Switzerland hosts several of the most famous races on the Alpine ski World Cup calendar, including the Lauberhorn in Wengen, the giant slalom and slalom in Adelboden, and speed races at Crans-Montana and St. Moritz. All can be reached by road from Geneva, though the logistics differ greatly, from car-free Wengen to Crans-Montana at 190 km and about 2 h 15 from the airport. AirportsTransfers.ch can drive spectators to the nearest practical drop-off point and collect them after the races.
- Wengen: the Lauberhorn races, held each January, car-free village
- Adelboden: men's technical races each January on the Chuenisbärgli
- Crans-Montana: women's speed races, 190 km / 2 h 15 from GVA
- St. Moritz: women's speed races, 400 km / 5 h from GVA
- Key tip: plan arrival and departure around crowds and road restrictions
Wengen and the Lauberhorn
The Lauberhorn downhill above Wengen, in the Bernese Oberland, is one of the longest and most celebrated races on the circuit, run beneath the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Race weekend in January draws large crowds and a festive atmosphere. Wengen is car-free: visitors drive to Lauterbrunnen, in the valley below, and continue by rack railway. From Geneva, the road runs via Bern and Interlaken, a journey that takes most of a morning. On race days, trains up to Wengen are crowded, so allow plenty of time, and plan to leave either before the final runs or once the main rush has passed.
Adelboden
Adelboden, also in the Bernese Oberland, hosts men's giant slalom and slalom races every January on the Chuenisbärgli slope, which finishes in a natural amphitheatre where tens of thousands of spectators gather. The village is reached by a single road from Frutigen, and on race days traffic is managed with closures, park-and-ride and shuttle buses. A chauffeur can drop you at the most practical point according to the arrangements in force and meet you at an agreed place afterwards, which avoids searching for scarce parking.
Crans-Montana and St. Moritz
Crans-Montana, on a sunny plateau above the Rhône valley in the Valais, has a long tradition of hosting women's speed races. At 190 km and about 2 h 15 from Geneva Airport, it is the most accessible Swiss venue from Geneva, and the last stretch climbs a winding road from Sierre. St. Moritz, in the Engadine, also regularly hosts women's races early in the season. At 400 km and about five hours from Geneva, it is best treated as a destination for several days rather than a day trip.
Some spectators combine two venues in one trip, for example Wengen and Adelboden, both in the Bernese Oberland and both held in January, or a race in Crans-Montana followed by a few days of skiing in the Valais. A chauffeur can link the venues, carry luggage and skis between them and adapt to changing race programmes, which often shift when weather forces a postponement or a change of discipline.
Spectator logistics
Race days follow a similar pattern everywhere: early starts, cold temperatures, big crowds and road restrictions. A little preparation makes the day far more enjoyable.
- Dress warmly: standing in the finish area for hours in January is cold
- Tickets and passes: check the organisers' information for access and grandstands
- Arrive early: roads and trains are busiest in the hour before the start
- Plan the exit: agree a pick-up point and time with your driver
- Stay nearby: for multi-day events, book accommodation early
Snow chains and winter conditions are part of the journey to any mountain venue, and experienced drivers make the climb safer and less stressful.
For a Swiss race weekend, staying in the valley rather than the host village is often easier: Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen for Wengen, Frutigen for Adelboden, or Sierre for Crans-Montana, with more rooms and simpler road access.
Hospitality and groups
World Cup races are popular for corporate hospitality, with companies inviting clients to VIP areas and dinners. For groups travelling from Geneva, a Mercedes V-Class seats up to 7 passengers with luggage and skis, while a Mercedes Sprinter minibus suits larger parties. Families can request child seats. If you plan to ski as well as watch, declare skis when booking so the right vehicle is allocated.
