The journey from Geneva
From Geneva, Swiss motorways take you across the Plateau to Basel, where the German A5 begins its long run north up the Upper Rhine plain past Freiburg and Karlsruhe. Heidelberg sits where the Neckar leaves the hills of the Odenwald and enters the plain, and the final approach gives a first view of the castle on its wooded slope. Most of the trip is fast motorway, with frequent service areas.
Rail travellers usually change once or twice. With a private car the journey has no breaks other than the ones you choose, and you are dropped close to your address even in the narrow old town, where traffic is restricted.
The castle and the old town
Heidelberg Castle, part Gothic and part Renaissance, was destroyed in the wars of the seventeenth century and partly by lightning later, and the ruins became an emblem of German Romanticism. The red sandstone façades, the gardens and the views over the river and town are the main attraction. Inside the cellar stands the Heidelberg Tun, an enormous wine barrel. A funicular climbs from the old town to the castle and beyond to the Königstuhl hill.
Below, the old town stretches along the Neckar. The Hauptstraße, a long pedestrian street, links the main squares, the Church of the Holy Spirit and the market square with its fountain. The Old Bridge, with its twin-towered gate, crosses the river, and on the far bank the Philosophers' Walk climbs through gardens and vineyards to a famous viewpoint over the castle and the city.
A university city
Heidelberg University was founded in 1386, making it the oldest in present-day Germany. Its Old University building, the University Library and the Student Prison, where misbehaving students were once locked up and covered the walls with drawings, can be visited. Today the city is a major centre for medical and life-science research, with important institutes and clinics, which brings many academic and business travellers.
Conference delegates and visiting researchers often need to reach campuses outside the old town, such as the Neuenheimer Feld science campus across the river. A chauffeur who knows exactly where to stop saves time, especially when you arrive with equipment or presentation materials.
Where to stay and day trips
The old town is atmospheric but busy and mostly pedestrian. Neuenheim, on the north bank, is residential and close to the science campus, while Bergheim, between the station and the old town, is practical for business visitors. Hotels along the Neckar valley east of the city offer a quieter setting.
Schwetzingen Palace and its gardens are a short drive west, and Speyer, with its great Romanesque cathedral, lies just across the Rhine. The Neckar valley upstream is dotted with castles, and Worms and Mannheim are close by. With a chauffeur by the hour, two or three of these fit comfortably into one day.
Practical tips
Heidelberg is busy in summer and at weekends, when day visitors fill the old town; mornings and evenings are calmer. Wear comfortable shoes for the cobbles and the climb to the castle. Spring and autumn are particularly attractive, and the Christmas markets bring a festive atmosphere in winter. For the return to Geneva, plan a margin for traffic on the A5 around Karlsruhe and Basel.
The old town is compact enough to explore on foot, and buses and trams connect it with the station, Neuenheim and Bergheim. If you are staying for several days, the funicular to the castle and the Königstuhl is worth riding at least once for the views over the Rhine plain, which on clear days reach as far as the Palatinate hills.
