From Geneva Airport to Lausanne, about 61 km, the A1 motorway takes around 45 minutes, while the old lakeside road through Coppet, Nyon, Rolle and Morges takes noticeably longer but passes castles, vineyards and harbours along the way. The motorway suits business arrivals and tight schedules; the lake road suits a relaxed first afternoon in Switzerland. AirportsTransfers.ch chauffeurs can take either.

The A1 motorway
The A1 between Geneva and Lausanne is one of the most important motorways in Switzerland, linking the two largest cities on Lake Geneva. It runs inland, slightly above the lake, through farmland and vineyards with the Jura on one side and glimpses of the water and the Alps on the other. It is efficient and direct, and from the airport the access is quick. Its weakness is traffic: at commuter times, particularly around Geneva and between Morges and Lausanne, congestion is common. Even so, it is the obvious choice when you have a meeting, a train or a hotel check-in to make, or when you land late at night.
The lakeside road
The old main road between the two cities, still known locally as the Route Suisse, runs close to the shore, passing through every town and village along the way. Speeds are lower, there are roundabouts and pedestrian crossings, and in summer the traffic includes cyclists and visitors. In exchange, it offers a slow reveal of the lake: harbours with sailing boats, waterside parks, old villages and stretches where the vineyards run down almost to the road. It is a good choice when time is not pressing and the weather is fine, and a chauffeur lets everyone in the car enjoy it.
Towns and sights along the shore
Coppet, just beyond the canton of Geneva, is known for its château, once home to the writer Madame de Staël and her celebrated literary circle. Nyon, founded by the Romans, has a castle overlooking the lake and a museum devoted to its Roman past, and its old town makes a pleasant short stop. Nearby, the Château de Prangins houses a branch of the Swiss National Museum. Rolle has a castle right on the water, and Saint-Prex is an attractive medieval village. Morges, the last town before Lausanne, has its own castle, a lakeside promenade and a lively market. Between the towns, the La Côte vineyards cover the slopes, producing much of the Vaud region's white wine.
When each route suits a chauffeured trip
The motorway makes sense for business travellers heading to the Lausanne offices, the university and the EPFL campus, or the federations and companies based around the city; for anyone catching a train or arriving in the evening; and for return trips to Geneva Airport, where reliable timing matters most. The lake road suits leisure travellers with a free afternoon, honeymooners, families who want a gentle introduction to Switzerland and visitors interested in wine and history. A good compromise is to take the motorway part of the way and leave it for a stop in Nyon or Morges, rejoining it afterwards. With an hourly booking, a chauffeur can make the lake road into a half-day tour.
Practical points
Both routes stay entirely in Switzerland, and the motorway is covered by the Swiss vignette. In summer, parking in the lakeside towns can be busy, which is another advantage of being dropped off and collected. On the lake road, allow considerably more time than on the motorway, especially on summer weekends. For airport runs in the opposite direction, the motorway is generally the safer choice unless your flight leaves late in the day and you have ample time. In winter, the lake road loses some of its charm in grey weather, but on a clear, cold day the views of the snow-covered Alps across the water are at their sharpest.
