Palexpo Geneva
Palexpo, Geneva's exhibition and congress centre, stands right next to Geneva Airport: on foot it is close by, while by road the access routes make it about 6 km and roughly 15 minutes. For most visitors walking or public transport is enough, but a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch makes sense for exhibitors with samples, VIP guests, groups and anyone staying in town rather than at the airport.
- Distance from GVA: next door on foot, about 6 km by road
- Drive time: around 15 minutes, longer on busy show days
- Border crossing: none
- By public transport: Geneva Airport station and buses serve the area
- A car makes sense for: hotel transfers, equipment, VIPs and groups
What Palexpo is
Palexpo is Geneva's main venue for large trade fairs, international congresses, consumer exhibitions and concerts, with the adjoining Geneva Arena hosting sport and entertainment. Its location beside the runway is a big part of its appeal: exhibitors and visitors can fly in and be at the halls within minutes. During major events, the area around the airport and the venue becomes busy with taxis, shuttles and delivery vehicles, and the hotels near the airport fill quickly, so many attendees stay in the city centre or around the lake.
Walking and public transport
If you arrive with hand luggage and are heading straight to the show, walking is often the simplest option, as the venue lies right beside the terminal. Geneva Airport station, under the terminal, connects the area with Cornavin and the lakeside line, and buses serve the Palexpo area too. Arriving passengers can generally pick up a free public transport ticket in the baggage reclaim area, valid for a limited period, which covers a short trip into town. For a single visitor on a day trip, there is no reason to book a car to cross the road.
Why exhibitors and organisers book cars
The picture changes for people working at the show. Exhibitors often travel with product samples, display material, laptops and presentation kits, and getting them from the terminal to the right hall entrance, or from a hotel in town each morning, is easier by car. A Mercedes V-Class van carries up to seven passengers and ten bags, and a Mercedes Sprinter minibus can move a whole stand team with equipment. Organisers welcoming speakers or VIP guests often prefer a chauffeur in a Mercedes S-Class who meets each guest in arrivals with a name sign and delivers them to the right entrance, rather than leaving them to find their way.
For days with several appointments, at Palexpo, at a hotel by the lake and at a client's office, a chauffeur booked by the hour, with a minimum of two hours, keeps the schedule together.
Large events also bring groups: sales teams flying in together, clients invited as guests of an exhibitor, or delegations attending a congress. Collecting them from several flights and taking them to a hotel in the city first, then to the venue, is much easier with vehicles assigned in advance. Because each booking has a fixed price per vehicle, budgeting is simple, and the person organising the trip can see the total before paying rather than reconciling taxi receipts afterwards.
Where your team is staying further afield, on the lakeside towards Nyon or Lausanne, or across the border in France, the case for a pre-booked car grows stronger, as public transport would involve one or more changes on the way to the halls each morning.
Show-day traffic and timing
Fifteen minutes is the normal road time between the terminal and the venue, but on the opening day of a large fair, or before a concert at the Arena, traffic around the airport can slow considerably. If you are staying in the city centre and travelling to Palexpo each morning, set off early, and allow extra time on the last day when everyone leaves for the airport at once. Your chauffeur knows the drop-off points and can adjust the route; flight tracking means a delayed arrival is absorbed without a missed pick-up.
When walking or the train is the better choice
To be honest, for a visitor with a small bag, heading directly from a flight to the halls and back again, walking or a short train ride is quicker than any car journey, and costs nothing extra. The transfer is useful when the trip includes a hotel elsewhere, heavy equipment, guests who need looking after, or a group that has to arrive together.
