Meyrin – CERN
Meyrin and CERN's main site are about 6 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 20 minutes by road on the western edge of the canton. Local buses and the tram that terminates at CERN serve the area well for light travellers, while a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is handy for researchers arriving with heavy luggage, visiting groups and anyone landing late at night.
- Distance from GVA: about 6 km by road
- Drive time: around 20 minutes
- Border crossing: none to the Meyrin site, which is in Switzerland
- By public transport: buses from the airport area, or the tram from the city to CERN
- A car makes sense for: relocations, groups, equipment and night arrivals
Meyrin, CERN and the border
Meyrin is a Geneva municipality just west of the airport, and it is known around the world as home to the main site of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. The laboratory straddles the Franco-Swiss border, with its main Meyrin site on the Swiss side and other sites and much of the Large Hadron Collider ring under French territory in the Pays de Gex. Visitors come for the Science Gateway, the public visitor centre designed by Renzo Piano, and for the wooden Globe of Science and Innovation across the road. Thousands of scientists, engineers and students also travel to CERN for work, often for weeks or months at a time.
Buses and the tram
Because Meyrin and the airport are neighbours, public transport links are short. Buses connect the airport area with Meyrin, and from the city centre a tram line runs out to its terminus at CERN, passing through Meyrin on the way. You can therefore take the train from the airport to Cornavin and continue by tram, or use a bus more directly, depending on where exactly you are going. Arriving air passengers can usually collect a free public transport ticket in the baggage reclaim area, valid for a limited time, which covers a first trip like this.
For a day visitor heading to the Science Gateway with a backpack, this works well. It becomes less convenient with suitcases, at night, or when the destination is a residence, a hotel in Meyrin or a site entrance away from the tram stop.
Researchers, relocations and long stays
Many arrivals at CERN are not tourists but people moving for a placement or a contract. They often land with several large suitcases, sometimes with family, and need to reach a hostel, a flat in Meyrin or a house across the border in Saint-Genis-Pouilly or Ferney-Voltaire. A private transfer takes everyone and everything in one trip. A Mercedes V-Class carries up to seven passengers and ten bags, and child seats are available on request. If the destination is on the French side, the route simply crosses the border into France on the way.
Visiting delegations and school or university groups are another common case. A Mercedes Sprinter minibus can collect a whole group from arrivals and deliver it to the visitor entrance, which is much simpler than shepherding twenty people through a bus change.
Teams arriving with equipment, such as detector components in protective cases, laptops and presentation material for a collaboration meeting, also benefit from a vehicle sized for the load. Mention bulky items when booking so the right car is assigned, and if the group is staying in Geneva rather than Meyrin, the chauffeur can drop bags at the hotel before continuing to the laboratory.
Timing and traffic
Twenty minutes is a typical time, but the roads around Meyrin and the airport carry heavy commuter traffic in the morning and late afternoon, including cross-border traffic from France. If you have a booked visit or a meeting at a fixed time, leave a margin. For departures, remember that the airport is close but security queues can be long at peak periods, so the short drive does not mean you can leave at the last minute.
When public transport is the better option
If you are a solo visitor travelling light, arriving during the day and heading to the Science Gateway or the tram terminus, public transport is quick and inexpensive, and a car offers little extra. The private transfer is worth it for relocations with luggage, groups, late-night landings and journeys that continue to addresses in the Pays de Gex.
