Lausanne
Lausanne is about 61 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 45 minutes by car along the A1 motorway on the shore of Lake Geneva. Direct trains from the airport station to Lausanne run frequently and take a similar time, so for many travellers rail is a genuinely good option. A private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is worth considering when you have heavy luggage, travel as a family or group, land late, or are heading somewhere the station does not serve conveniently.
- Distance from GVA: about 61 km
- Drive time: around 45 minutes, longer at rush hour
- Train: direct services from the airport station to Lausanne
- Border crossing: none, the whole route is in Switzerland
- Car is better for: hilltop and lakeside addresses, groups, night arrivals, business schedules
The train: a strong option
Genève-Aéroport station is right next to the terminal, and direct trains leave regularly for Lausanne, following the lake through Nyon and Morges. The journey is comfortable, the views over the water are lovely, and for a traveller with a small case heading to the area around Lausanne station, it is hard to argue with. From the station, the city's metro climbs north to the centre and descends south to Ouchy on the lakefront, which helps for many hotels.
The weaknesses are about the last kilometre. Lausanne is built on steep slopes, and addresses in the upper districts, in Pully or Lutry along the lake, or towards Épalinges and the university campuses need an extra connection or a taxi. With several bags or children, those changes take more effort than the train ride itself, and trains at peak hours can be full of commuters.
Buses and coaches
For this route, buses are rarely the first choice, since the train covers it so well. Coaches pass along the motorway in some cases, but they offer no real advantage in time or comfort over rail for most visitors. If your accommodation is far from the railway, the realistic alternatives are a taxi on arrival in Lausanne or a direct private car from the airport.
When a private transfer is better
Lausanne attracts many business and academic visitors: the Olympic organisations and sports federations based in the city, the EPFL and University of Lausanne campuses by the lake, the IMD business school and a range of company headquarters. Arriving from the airport straight to a meeting or a campus building, without changing trains or calling a taxi, saves time and arrives on schedule. A Business Sedan (Mercedes E-Class) offers a quiet space to work during the 45 minutes.
Families benefit from child seats on request and door-to-door service, and groups, from sports teams to seminar participants, can travel together in a Van (Mercedes V-Class) for up to 7 people or a Minibus (Mercedes Sprinter). Because the price is fixed per vehicle, sharing it often makes the cost per person reasonable. Late arrivals, when trains are less frequent, are another strong case for the car.
Train or car: a quick decision guide
Take the train if you are one or two people with light luggage, arriving during the day and staying near the station, Flon or Ouchy. Book a car if you have a lot of luggage or sports equipment, travel with children or older relatives, are going to a hilltop address, a lakeside village or a campus, arrive late at night, or need to be somewhere at a precise time. For business groups, a car also means everyone arrives together and on time.
Lausanne is also a gateway to the Lavaux vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage site stretching east along the lake. A chauffeur by the hour, from a minimum of 2 hours, can turn the arrival day into a short tour of the terraces before reaching your hotel.
Practical tips for the drive
The A1 between Geneva and Lausanne is one of the busiest motorways in Switzerland, and morning and evening peaks can add time, especially around Morges. If you have an appointment, give yourself a margin. In the city, steep streets and one-way systems make a local chauffeur useful. When returning to the airport, plan the departure time carefully around commuter traffic.
