Getting from Geneva Airport to the Val di Sole
The Val di Sole lies in the north-west of Trentino, between the Adamello-Presanella and the Brenta Dolomites. From Geneva the route enters Italy and reaches the valley either from the south over the Campiglio plateau or from the east, coming up from the Adige valley through the Val di Non. The last part is a valley road that serves several villages, so the exact destination, Folgarida, Marilleva 900 or Marilleva 1400, matters when you book.
A drive of over six hours deserves a proper pause, and your chauffeur can stop for lunch or coffee along the way. For families, arriving in daylight makes the first evening easier: you can find the ski hire shop, check the route to the lifts and get the children settled before the first ski day.
The ski area: wide slopes and a big link
Folgarida and Marilleva share a network of pistes on wooded slopes above the Val di Sole, mainly suited to intermediate skiers who like long cruising runs through the trees. From the top of the area, lifts and pistes connect over to Madonna di Campiglio, and from there on to Pinzolo, creating one of the largest ski areas in Trentino on a single lift pass.
The area has a good balance of blue and red runs, plus some steeper pitches for confident skiers, including the long descents back towards the valley floor. Beginners have dedicated areas and ski schools in both resorts. In good snow, the long run down to the valley is a satisfying end to the day, while on busier days the link to Campiglio lets you spread out across a much bigger mountain.
Where to stay: Folgarida, Marilleva 900 or 1400
Folgarida is a traditional mountain village with hotels and chalets spread among the trees, close to the lifts. Marilleva has two levels. Marilleva 1400 is a purpose-built, car-free station with accommodation right on the slopes, much appreciated by families who want to ski from the door. Marilleva 900, on the valley floor, has a gondola up to the slopes and good access to the villages and services of the Val di Sole.
The valley itself is pleasant and lived-in, with small towns and villages strung along the Noce river. Outside skiing there is cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledging and winter walks, and the valley is known in summer for rafting and mountain biking. Restaurants serve Trentino dishes and the apples of the nearby Val di Non are a local speciality.
Compared with Madonna di Campiglio next door, Folgarida and Marilleva feel more relaxed and practical. Accommodation is generally simpler, the atmosphere is less about being seen, and the ski-in, ski-out options at Marilleva 1400 are a real advantage with small children. Yet you still have the whole linked area at your disposal, so a day skiing over to Campiglio for lunch is easy to fit into the week.
Best time to go and practical tips
The season normally runs from early December to around Easter, with January often the quietest and best-value month. February is busier because of school holidays across Europe, while March brings longer, sunnier days. Because the resort faces north into the valley, snow on the upper slopes usually holds well through the season.
- Exact address: give the precise village or level so the chauffeur goes to the right door
- Weekend traffic: Saturday changeovers bring more cars on the valley road
- Winter equipment: vehicles run on winter tyres and carry snow chains
- Return trip: leave about seven to seven and a half hours before your flight
Families who want to ski straight from the door should check whether their accommodation is really on the piste or relies on a short walk or a shuttle.
