Door-to-door: arriving at your chalet with a private transfer

Steep lanes, snowbanks and hidden key boxes: how a private transfer gets you to the chalet door, and what to arrange in advance for a smooth arrival.

A private transfer can take you from Geneva Airport right to the door of your chalet, avoiding the luggage-dragging that comes with trains, buses and taxi ranks. Some chalets sit on steep, narrow or snow-covered lanes, and keys may be collected from an agency or a key box, so a little planning ensures the last few hundred metres go as smoothly as the motorway. AirportsTransfers.ch chauffeurs help with the bags to the entrance.

  • Address details: send the exact chalet address, name and any access notes at booking
  • Access roads: steep, narrow or snowy lanes may need a smaller vehicle or a short walk
  • Keys: confirm whether they are at an agency, a key box or with a host
  • Luggage: your chauffeur helps carry bags and skis to the entrance
  • Car-free resorts: in Zermatt, the drive ends at Täsch and the last leg is by shuttle train

Why door-to-door matters in the mountains

A typical family ski holiday involves suitcases, ski bags, boot bags and children. Moving that lot between trains, buses and taxis is hard work, and the last stretch, from a bus stop to a chalet up a snowy lane, is often the hardest. A private transfer removes those changes: you leave the arrivals hall with your chauffeur and next stand on the chalet doorstep.

It also makes timing more flexible. If your flight is delayed or you land very late, the vehicle still goes all the way, whereas the last public services to some villages run relatively early in the evening.

Chalet access roads

Chalets are often tucked into hillsides above the village centre, reached by narrow lanes with tight bends and steep gradients. In winter these may be partly covered in snow and ice, even when the main road is clear. Vehicles carry snow chains for mountain conditions, and chauffeurs fit them where needed, but some private lanes are not cleared to the same standard as public roads.

In a few cases a large van or minibus cannot reach the door safely, and the final metres are covered on foot or by a smaller vehicle sent by the chalet operator. Telling us about the access when booking, or sharing the chalet's own directions, allows the right vehicle to be chosen. A Mercedes V-Class handles most chalet lanes comfortably; a Sprinter suits large groups where access is good.

Keys and check-in arrangements

Arrangements vary considerably:

  • Catered chalets usually have staff or a host waiting to welcome guests
  • Self-catered properties often use a key box with a code sent in advance
  • Many apartments and chalets work through a rental agency in the village, whose office keeps set hours
  • Some owners meet guests personally, which requires an agreed arrival time

If your keys are held by an agency, check its opening hours on your arrival day, and whether there is an after-hours procedure. A stop at the agency can be included in your transfer, but it should be mentioned in advance so the timing works.

Luggage, skis and the last few steps

Your chauffeur loads and unloads your bags at both ends and helps carry them to the chalet entrance. Ski bags should be declared when booking so the vehicle has enough space: a sedan takes about three passengers and three bags, while a V-Class van takes up to seven passengers with ten bags and skis.

If the chalet is up a flight of outdoor steps, keep a small bag with essentials, slippers and children's comforters separate, so you can settle in while the rest is brought up. Wear shoes with grip on arrival; the path to the door may be icy.

Car-free resorts

Some resorts restrict or ban private cars. Zermatt is the best-known example: road transfers from Geneva Airport finish at Täsch, about 231 km and 2 h 35 away, where a shuttle train continues to the village and electric taxis or hotel vehicles cover the final stretch. Your chauffeur drops you at the Täsch terminal with your luggage, where trolleys are available.

Other resorts have pedestrian centres or partly car-free villages, where vehicles can stop only at designated points. In these cases it is useful to know which drop-off is closest to your accommodation.

Booking your door-to-door transfer

Book online with AirportsTransfers.ch, see the fixed price per vehicle before paying by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and add the full chalet address and access notes. Your chauffeur follows your flight, waits in arrivals with a name sign and includes the waiting time if you land late. Child seats can be fitted on request, and skis must be declared at booking so there is room for everything. If the chalet has unusual access, call or WhatsApp +41 78 346 56 77, available 24/7.

Frequently asked questions

Can a private transfer take me right to my chalet?
Yes, in most cases. Where access is very steep or narrow, the final metres may be on foot or need a smaller vehicle, so share access details when booking.
Will the driver help with luggage?
Yes. Your chauffeur loads and unloads your bags and skis and helps carry them to the chalet entrance.
What if I need to collect keys from an agency?
Mention it when booking so a stop can be planned, and check the agency's hours for your arrival day.
