A chauffeured tour is the easiest way to see several Christmas markets in one trip: you travel door to door between towns, with gifts and luggage in the boot, and arrive at each market fresh rather than tired from train changes. From Geneva, Montreux is 91 km away, Annecy 44 km, Lyon 150 km, and the Alsace markets of Colmar and Strasbourg lie further north, so AirportsTransfers.ch can design a route lasting from a single day to a week.
- Day options: Geneva, Lausanne, Montreux or Annecy, each within about an hour
- Weekend options: Lyon and Annecy, or Basel
- Longer tours: Basel, Colmar and Strasbourg across the border into France
- Vehicles: sedans for couples, V-Class van or Sprinter for families and groups
- Flexibility: chauffeur by the hour, transfers between towns, return to GVA
Why tour the markets by car
Christmas markets are best experienced in the late afternoon and evening, when the lights come on. That timing does not suit trains well, especially when you are carrying luggage, shopping bags and wine bought along the way, and some markets are in towns with limited connections. With a chauffeur, you leave your hotel when you are ready, stop for lunch in a village, and are dropped close to the market rather than at a distant station.
It also suits mixed groups: grandparents who prefer less walking, children who need a nap, or friends who want to share mulled wine without one of them having to drive. Many markets are in historic centres where parking is difficult and traffic is restricted in December, so being dropped off and collected removes a real headache.
One-day and weekend routes
For a single festive day, start in Geneva with the lakeside market, then head along the lake to Lausanne, 61 km and about 45 minutes from the airport, for its old-town stalls and light trail, finishing in Montreux, 91 km from GVA, where chalets line the waterfront. Another option is an afternoon in Annecy, just 40 minutes away, with its canal-side market, and a return to Geneva for dinner.
For a weekend, combine Lyon and Annecy: a day and evening in Lyon, especially during the Festival of Lights in early December, then Annecy on the way back. Alternatively, spend a weekend in Basel, whose market fills two old-town squares, with a stop in Bern on the way. Bern lies about 160 km and 1 h 50 from GVA and has its own markets in the arcaded old town.
- Day: Geneva, Lausanne and Montreux along the lake
- Day: Annecy's old town by the canals
- Weekend: Lyon and Annecy
- Weekend: Bern and Basel
A longer tour into Alsace
Alsace is the heartland of Christmas markets. A four- or five-day tour can travel from Geneva to Basel, then cross the border into France to Colmar, with its several markets spread through the old town, and on to Strasbourg, whose historic Christkindelsmärik is one of the oldest in Europe. The wine villages between Colmar and Strasbourg, such as Kaysersberg, Riquewihr and Eguisheim, hold smaller markets that are worth a detour.
The pace matters. Plan one main market per evening and keep daytime for travel, sightseeing, museums and long lunches. Spending two nights in one place, for example Colmar, allows a day exploring the surrounding villages without moving luggage. On the final day, a direct transfer back to Geneva or Geneva Airport, timed to your flight, rounds off the trip.
Practical tips for a markets tour
Book hotels early, as December is busy, especially in Alsace and during Lyon's festival. Weekday evenings are calmer than Saturdays. Dress warmly in layers with comfortable shoes, carry some cash for small stalls, and keep valuables secure in crowds. Many markets use deposit mugs for hot drinks: keep them as souvenirs or return them for the deposit. Leave space in your luggage for gifts, or ask us for a larger vehicle.
Tell us your ideas when booking, including the towns you want to see and how many nights you plan in each, and we will help shape a realistic schedule, including the chauffeur's rest periods on multi-day tours.
Booking your chauffeured tour
AirportsTransfers.ch displays a fixed price per vehicle before you pay online by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Arriving at Geneva Airport, you are met with a name sign, and your flight is tracked so waiting is included if it is late. Choose an E-Class for up to three passengers and three bags, an S-Class for long stretches, a V-Class van for up to seven with ten bags, or a Sprinter for larger groups. Book a chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours) for local evenings, or a set of transfers for a multi-day tour. Child seats and company invoices are available. Call or WhatsApp +41 78 346 56 77, day or night.
