Getting to Champéry from Geneva Airport

The route follows the A1 along Lake Geneva to Lausanne, continues on the A9 past Montreux and into the Rhône valley, and leaves the motorway towards Monthey. From Monthey a mountain road climbs through Troistorrents and Val-d'Illiez to Champéry, at the head of the valley. The motorway part is fast, and the valley road is well maintained, although it is winding in places and can be slow after snowfall. The whole journey stays in Switzerland. On clear days, the Dents du Midi dominate the view as you approach the village. Expect around an hour and forty minutes in normal traffic, longer on Saturdays when traffic heads to the Valais resorts.

The ski area: Champéry and the Portes du Soleil

From the village, a cable car rises to Planachaux and the Swiss heart of the Portes du Soleil, around Les Crosets and Champoussin. From there, you can ski towards Morgins and Châtel, or across the border into Avoriaz, and explore the vast linked circuit that crosses back and forth between France and Switzerland. The terrain around Champéry is varied, with open, rolling slopes suitable for intermediates and some challenging runs for experts. The most famous is the Swiss Wall, also known as the Chavanette, one of the steepest and most notorious mogul runs in the Alps, on the border with Avoriaz. Beginners usually start on gentler areas higher up, as the village itself is not at the foot of a nursery slope. Off-piste skiing should always be done with a guide.

The village and where to stay

Champéry is one of the most charming villages in the Valais, with a long main street lined with traditional wooden chalets, carved balconies and a church with a distinctive bell tower. It has a relaxed, authentic atmosphere, with shops, restaurants, bars and a sports centre with ice skating and swimming. Accommodation includes hotels, chalets and apartments, many within walking distance of the cable car. Non-skiers can enjoy snowshoeing, winter walks, ice skating, curling and visits to the thermal baths of the region or to Montreux and the Château de Chillon. The village is also a popular base in summer for hiking and mountain biking.

When to go and practical tips

The season usually runs from mid-December to early April. Champéry village is relatively low, so skiing back to the village depends on snow conditions, but the higher slopes of the Portes du Soleil generally provide reliable cover from January to March. Christmas and February are the busiest periods. Saturday traffic on the A9 towards the Valais can be heavy, particularly around Montreux. Winter tyres are standard in Switzerland, and chains may be needed in the Val d'Illiez after snowfall. Declare skis and boards when booking.

Champéry is also well placed for travellers who want to combine skiing with time on Lake Geneva. Montreux, Vevey and Lausanne are all within reach, so a ski week can easily be followed by a few days on the lake, with a transfer arranged from the village to your next hotel instead of returning to the airport straight away.

The return journey

Allow about three hours between leaving Champéry and your flight on a winter Saturday, less midweek. The Val d'Illiez road and the A9 near Montreux are the usual slow points. After a fresh snowfall, the valley road may be cleared later in the morning than the motorway, so an early pick-up gives the most reliable journey. Agree the time with your driver the evening before and make sure ski passes and rental equipment have been returned, so nothing delays loading the vehicle on departure day.
