Swiss Castles Road Trip from Geneva: Chillon, Gruyères, Thun, Oberhofen

Four castles, three lakes and one chauffeured road trip: from Chillon on Lake Geneva to Gruyères, Thun and Oberhofen on Lake Thun.

A Swiss castles road trip from Geneva can link four of the country's most picturesque fortresses in two or three days: Chillon near Montreux, Gruyères in the Fribourg pre-Alps, and Thun and Oberhofen on Lake Thun. The first stop, Montreux, is about 91 km and 1 h 05 from Geneva Airport, and each later leg is under about an hour and a half. AirportsTransfers.ch can chauffeur the whole route and adapt stops to your interests.

  • Chillon: on Lake Geneva near Montreux, about 91 km / 1 h 05 from GVA
  • Gruyères: hilltop castle and medieval village in the Fribourg pre-Alps
  • Thun: castle overlooking the old town and the River Aare
  • Oberhofen: lakeside castle on the shore of Lake Thun
  • Border crossing: none, the trip stays in Switzerland

Chillon Castle: on the water

Chillon stands on a rocky island just off the shore at Veytaux, near Montreux, and is one of Switzerland's most visited historic monuments. Its origins go back to the Middle Ages, when the Counts of Savoy developed it to control the route along the lake. Inside, you can explore courtyards, great halls, painted chambers and the vaulted dungeon made famous by Lord Byron's poem The Prisoner of Chillon; Byron's name is carved into one of its pillars. Allow a couple of hours, and walk along the lakeside afterwards for views of the castle against the mountains.

Gruyères: castle, cheese and a village on a hill

From Montreux, the road climbs into the Fribourg pre-Alps, reaching Gruyères in under an hour. The small medieval town, closed to cars, stretches along a single cobbled street up to its castle. The castle, the seat of the Counts of Gruyère for centuries, contains period rooms, tapestries and a formal garden with views over the green hills. In the same village, the HR Giger Museum, devoted to the artist behind the creatures of the film Alien, makes a surprising contrast. At the foot of the hill, a show dairy explains how Gruyère cheese is made, and the region is also known for double cream and meringues.

  • Arrive early or late in the day to enjoy the village before tour groups.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for the cobbles and the climb to the castle.
  • Try a fondue moitié-moitié, made with Gruyère and Vacherin Fribourgeois.

Thun: castle above the Aare

From Gruyères, the road heads across to the Simmental or via Bulle and Fribourg to Thun, the gateway to the Bernese Oberland, about an hour and a half away. Thun Castle, with its four corner turrets, dominates the old town from a hill above the River Aare. Inside, the great hall and the historical museum tell the story of the region, and the turrets offer sweeping views over the lake to the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau on clear days. Down below, the old town's raised-pavement shopping street and covered wooden bridges over the Aare are delightful to explore.

Oberhofen: a fairy-tale castle on the lake

A short drive along the north shore of Lake Thun brings you to Oberhofen, a castle whose slim tower rises straight from the water. Its rooms show how wealthy families lived in different eras, and its park, with lawns and trees running down to the lake, is one of the most beautiful spots on the shore. Lake steamers stop here, so you could also arrive by boat from Thun. Nearby Hünegg and Spiez castles extend the theme if you have more time.

Spiez, on the southern shore, pairs its castle with a small church and vineyards rising above the bay, and is a natural place to pause before heading back. Combining a boat trip between Thun, Oberhofen and Spiez with your chauffeur meeting you at the final landing is an easy way to see the lake from the water while your luggage stays safely in the car. On a clear day, the views from the steamer deck across to the snow-covered Bernese Alps are among the finest of the whole route.

Planning the trip

A comfortable plan is one night near Montreux or Gruyères and one or two nights in Thun, which leaves time for lake cruises and walks. Castles generally operate seasonal schedules, so check opening details before you go, particularly in winter when some have reduced access. Spring and autumn are lovely seasons for this route, with fewer crowds and clear mountain views. Returning to Geneva Airport from Thun takes you via Bern, about 160 km and 1 h 50 from GVA, making a final stop in the Swiss capital easy.
