Several Swiss resorts, including Zermatt, Saas-Fee, Wengen, Mürren, Braunwald and the Aletsch villages of Riederalp and Bettmeralp, are car-free: visitors arrive by road at a terminal and complete the journey by train, cable car or on foot. A private transfer drives to that terminal, so the key is knowing where it is and how the final leg works. AirportsTransfers.ch plans each drop-off around the resort's access system and the passengers' luggage.
- Zermatt: drop-off at Täsch, then shuttle train
- Saas-Fee: road to the edge of the village; on foot or electric vehicle inside
- Wengen: drop-off at Lauterbrunnen, then mountain railway
- Mürren: via Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg, then cable car and train
- Riederalp, Bettmeralp, Braunwald: cable car or funicular from the valley
Zermatt: Täsch and the shuttle
Zermatt is the best-known car-free resort. From Geneva Airport, the drive to Täsch is about 231 km and 2 h 35, with roughly 3 h 15 to Zermatt including the shuttle train. The terminal at Täsch is designed for arriving visitors, with trolleys for luggage and frequent trains up to Zermatt station, where electric taxis and hotel shuttles take over.
Allowing for the change of mode, Zermatt is the car-free resort that needs the most time from Geneva, and on winter Saturdays the terminal can be busy, so a calm arrival plan pays off.
Saas-Fee: to the village edge
Saas-Fee, in the neighbouring Saastal, works differently. The road climbs from Visp through Saas-Grund and ends at large car parks at the entrance to the village. Beyond that point, the streets are reserved for pedestrians and small electric vehicles. Many hotels offer electric shuttles or porter services for luggage, and some guests simply walk with their cases.
For a private transfer, this means the chauffeur can drive right to the edge of the resort, a shorter final leg than at Zermatt. Calling the hotel in advance to arrange collection at the car parks is a good idea, especially with heavy bags or skis.
Wengen and Mürren: the Lauterbrunnen valley
In the Bernese Oberland, two classic resorts sit on terraces above the Lauterbrunnen valley and can only be reached by rail or cable car. For Wengen, drivers stop at Lauterbrunnen, where a large car park and station sit at the foot of the cliffs. The Wengernalp railway climbs from there to Wengen and on towards Kleine Scheidegg.
Mürren, on the opposite side of the valley, has two access options. From Lauterbrunnen, a cable car rises to Grütschalp, where a small railway continues along the cliff edge to Mürren. Alternatively, from Stechelberg at the end of the valley, a cable car climbs via Gimmelwald. Both offer remarkable views; the choice depends on where your accommodation lies and how much luggage you carry.
Other car-free villages
In the Valais, Riederalp and Bettmeralp sit on a sunny plateau above the Rhône valley near the Aletsch glacier. Visitors leave the road at Mörel or Betten and ride cable cars up to the villages, which are car-free. In eastern Switzerland, Braunwald in the canton of Glarus is reached by a funicular from Linthal.
The approach to these villages is part of the experience. Cable cars rise above the Rhône valley in a few minutes, and the funicular to Braunwald climbs steeply through forest. Luggage generally travels with passengers in the cabin, although some lift operators and tourist offices offer separate luggage transport to accommodation, which is worth asking about when booking a chalet or hotel.
Each of these resorts has its own rhythm: smaller, quieter and particularly attractive to families who appreciate streets without traffic.
Luggage and timing on the final leg
- Pack sensibly: wheeled cases and ski bags that can be handled on trolleys and trains
- Contact your hotel: many offer luggage collection from the station or terminal
- Check last departures: for late arrivals, confirm that trains or cable cars are still running
- Return trips: agree pick-up times with a buffer for the final leg down to the valley
Your chauffeur will unload luggage at the terminal and help you to the platform or cable car station where possible. For car-free resorts in the Valais, the drive from Geneva follows the Rhône valley via Lausanne and Montreux; for Wengen and Mürren, it runs across the Swiss Plateau via Bern and then along Lake Thun to Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen.
