  • Distance from GVA: 641 km by road
  • Drive time: around 6 h 55
  • Border crossing: the route crosses the border into Italy
  • Ski area: Belvedere slopes, Sella Ronda and the Dolomiti Superski pass
  • Best for: intermediates, Sella Ronda fans and those who enjoy lively evenings

Getting from Geneva Airport to Canazei

Most journeys head into northern Italy and up the Brenner motorway (A22) towards Bolzano. Depending on conditions, the chauffeur leaves the motorway either to the south, climbing through the Val di Fiemme via Cavalese, Predazzo and Moena, or near Bolzano, crossing the Costalunga pass. Both routes end in the Val di Fassa, which rises gently between steep rock walls to Canazei at its top.

With almost seven hours of driving, the trip is best split with a lunch break, typically somewhere on the Italian plain or near Lake Garda. The last part of the drive through the valley villages is slower, but the views of the Catinaccio (Rosengarten) and Sassolungo peaks more than make up for it. In heavy snow, allow extra time for this final stretch.

The ski area: Belvedere, Sella Ronda and Marmolada

From the centre of Canazei a cable car climbs to the Belvedere area, which connects with the Pordoi pass and the rest of the Sella Ronda. You can follow the circuit clockwise or anticlockwise around the Sella massif, linking Val di Fassa with Arabba, Alta Badia and Val Gardena. From nearby Campitello, a cable car reaches the Col Rodella, another popular entry point with superb views.

The Marmolada is the great highlight for strong skiers. From Arabba or Malga Ciapela, lifts reach the glacier, and from the top a very long descent runs back down, with views across the entire Dolomites. Closer to home, the Belvedere slopes offer wide, sunny pistes for intermediates, and beginners have nursery areas in the valley and at the Pordoi. Off-piste routes off the Sella, including famous couloirs, should only be attempted with a qualified guide.

Canazei and the Val di Fassa

Canazei is the liveliest village in the Val di Fassa, with a pedestrian centre of shops, bars and restaurants and a lively après-ski scene. Like Val Gardena and Alta Badia, the Val di Fassa is a Ladin valley, with its own language and traditions alongside Italian, and its old wooden houses and painted façades give the villages real character.

Off the slopes, you can try winter hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing along the valley floor or sledging, and there are wellness centres in many hotels. Trentino cuisine is hearty, with polenta, mushrooms, game and canederli. Nearby villages such as Campitello, Pozza and Vigo offer quieter places to stay, connected to the slopes by lifts and the valley ski bus.

Best time to go and practical tips

The season generally runs from early December to early April. Snowmaking is extensive, so the Sella Ronda is usually open from mid-December. January brings cold, clear days and fewer people, February is busy with school holidays, and March is ideal for long days on the circuit and the Marmolada descent, which is best skied when the light is good.

  • Changeover days: roads into the Val di Fassa are busy on Saturdays
  • Mountain passes: passes such as the Costalunga can be snowy, so plan extra time
  • Skis and boards: declare them at booking so the right vehicle comes
  • Return: leave at least seven and a half hours before your flight

If you plan to ski the Sella Ronda often, choose accommodation within walking distance of the Belvedere cable car; otherwise, check the ski bus timetable from your hotel.

The Sella Ronda is about route-finding as much as skiing: follow the orange signs for one direction and the green signs for the other, and check the last lift times so you are not stranded in the wrong valley at the end of the day.
