Breuil-Cervinia
Breuil-Cervinia is 196 km from Geneva Airport, about 2 h 40 by road, at the head of the Valtournenche in Italy's Aosta Valley, directly below the Matterhorn. Its high, snow-sure slopes and long gentle runs make it a good choice for families with children who can already ski a little, and AirportsTransfers.ch can bring you there with child seats fitted, through the tunnels and up the valley.

Getting there with children
The most common route crosses into France, passes Chamonix and enters Italy through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, then descends the Aosta Valley past Aosta to Châtillon. From there, the road climbs the Valtournenche to Breuil-Cervinia. Depending on conditions, the route through Switzerland and the Great St Bernard Tunnel is an alternative. Either way, a stop in the Aosta Valley gives children a break before the final climb.
The Valtournenche road has some bends, so children prone to car sickness should sit by a window. A morning flight brings you to Cervinia by mid-afternoon, leaving time for equipment hire and a short walk. The chauffeur drops you at your accommodation door, which helps with luggage at altitude.
Why Breuil-Cervinia suits families
Cervinia is one of the highest ski resorts in the Alps, which gives it a long season and reliable snow. The ski area is known for wide, gentle, well-groomed slopes, many of them blue, and for very long runs, such as the descent to Valtournenche, which children love once they have some confidence. The slopes are linked to Zermatt in Switzerland via the Plateau Rosa, creating an international ski area under the Matterhorn.
The resort is less suited to absolute beginners on very cold or windy days, as the slopes are exposed and upper lifts can close in bad weather. Young children may also feel the altitude on the first day, so take it gently, keep them hydrated and avoid going straight to the highest points. For families with children who can already ski, though, the long, easy cruising runs are a real treat.
Ski schools and lessons
Several ski schools in Cervinia offer lessons for children, from beginners to confident young skiers. Instructors usually speak English as well as Italian, and children's areas with gentle slopes are located near the village and the lower lifts.
Book lessons in advance for school holidays. For very young children, look for snow gardens and kindergarten programmes. Families can ski together on long blue runs, and a day trip to Zermatt over the border is an exciting adventure for older children who are confident skiers, as long as you check the weather and the last lift times home.
Beyond skiing: activities for children
Cervinia's activities are more limited than in larger towns, but there are sledging areas, snowshoe walks, an ice rink and winter hiking paths. The village has cafés, pizzerias and gelaterie, and Italian mountain cooking is generous and child-friendly. Watching the Matterhorn change colour at sunset is a simple pleasure for the whole family.
For a change of scene, the Aosta Valley offers castles, the Roman town of Aosta and lower villages. Families who like a quieter base sometimes stay in Valtournenche, which is linked to the Cervinia slopes.
Cervinia's layout is relatively compact, with the main lifts close to the village centre, so walks in ski boots are generally short. The village has a lively but relaxed atmosphere, with families from Italy and across Europe, and evenings are mostly spent over pizza or pasta rather than loud après-ski. If your children are older and confident, a day skiing the long runs down to Valtournenche, followed by the lift back up, makes a satisfying adventure.
Packing and arrival-day planning
Pack very warm layers, neck warmers, helmets, goggles, sun cream and lip balm, as it can be cold and bright at altitude. Bring passports or identity cards for everyone, since the route crosses borders. Declare skis, boards and buggies when booking so the vehicle has enough room.
On arrival, keep the first afternoon calm and let children adjust to the altitude. For your return, leave Cervinia about four hours before your flight, more on Saturdays or when snow is forecast, as tunnel and valley traffic can slow the journey.
