The journey from Geneva Airport
The route runs south-east from Geneva into the Arve valley, past Chamonix, and under Mont Blanc through the tunnel to Courmayeur. The A5 motorway then follows the Aosta Valley, a corridor of medieval castles and vineyards, until it reaches the Piedmont plain near Ivrea. The final section crosses rolling hills and the long glacial ridge of the Serra before reaching Biella.
There is no simple rail connection: travelling by train usually involves several changes, often via Turin or Novara. For business visitors who want to arrive ready for a meeting, or for families heading to the mountains around Biella, a direct transfer is the practical option.
The textile capital
Biella's prosperity was built on wool. The soft water of its mountain streams, which flow down valleys such as the Cervo, powered mills and was ideal for washing and dyeing fibres. Over generations the area became internationally known for high-quality fabrics, and several historic family-run mills still supply fashion houses around the world.
Industrial heritage is visible across the valleys, where large brick mills line the rivers. Some have been converted into museums, outlets and cultural spaces. The most notable is Cittadellarte, the foundation set up by the artist Michelangelo Pistoletto in a former wool mill beside the Cervo, which hosts exhibitions and projects linking art and society.
Upper and lower Biella
The city has two levels. The lower town, Biella Piano, is the modern centre with shops, the cathedral and a beautifully preserved Romanesque baptistery beside it. Above it, the Piazzo is the medieval upper town, reached by a short funicular or a steep walk. Its arcaded square, palaces and quiet lanes give a sense of the old town before industrialisation.
Nearby, the Ricetto di Candelo is a remarkable medieval fortified village of stone storehouses, once used to protect wine and harvests, and well worth a short detour.
Biella also makes a convenient base for exploring the wider region. The Aosta Valley, with its castles and Roman ruins, is a short drive back towards the Alps, and the lakes of northern Italy are within reach for a day out. For those who like to walk, the hills above the city have marked trails linking villages, chapels and viewpoints over the plain, with Monte Rosa visible on clear days.
Oropa and the hills
Some twenty minutes above the city, the Sanctuary of Oropa is one of the most important Marian shrines in the Alps. Its vast courtyards and basilicas sit in a mountain amphitheatre, and the Sacro Monte of Oropa, with chapels along a hillside path, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing of the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy. A cable car rises from the sanctuary to higher pastures and walking trails.
- Bessa nature reserve: traces of ancient Roman gold mining among piles of stones
- Burcina park: a hillside park famous for its rhododendrons in late spring
- Lake Viverone: a lake on the edge of the Serra, popular in summer
Practical tips
Biella is a calm, unhurried city, ideal for travellers who want to discover a less-visited part of Piedmont. Local cooking is hearty, with polenta concia rich with mountain cheese, cured meats and local beers and wines. Outlet shopping for fabrics and knitwear is a popular activity. Many hotels are in the lower town or in the hills; give us the exact address when booking, as some properties in the valleys are reached by narrow roads.
