Vevey travel guide: museums, markets and lakefront from Geneva Airport

Vevey, 80 km from Geneva Airport, mixes Chaplin heritage, food culture and a relaxed lakefront on the Swiss Riviera. A practical guide.

GVA → VeveyCity · Switzerland

Vevey

Vevey is 80 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes by motorway along Lake Geneva, entirely within Switzerland. Set at the eastern edge of the Lavaux vineyards on the Swiss Riviera, it is a relaxed lakeside town known for its food museum, its links with Charlie Chaplin and one of the largest market squares in the country. AirportsTransfers.ch brings you there door to door, with a fixed price for the vehicle.

  • Distance from GVA: 80 km
  • Drive time: about 1 h 10
  • Border crossing: none, Switzerland only
  • Best for: culture, food, lakeside walks, business visits
  • Getting there: A1 then A9 motorway, or trains via Lausanne

From Geneva Airport to Vevey

The road follows the A1 along the lake to Lausanne, continues on the A9 above the Lavaux terraces and leaves at the Vevey exit, from where it is a short descent into town. The views over the lake from the motorway viaducts are excellent on a clear day. Rush hours around Lausanne are the main bottleneck, so morning arrivals on weekdays should plan a little extra time.

By rail, Vevey is on the main line along the lake, with connections from the airport usually involving a change in Lausanne. That is perfectly manageable for light travellers. A car is preferable with lots of luggage, a group, a late landing, or accommodation in the hills above the town, such as Mont Pèlerin or Corsier-sur-Vevey.

What Vevey is known for

Vevey is the home of a major global food company, which has its headquarters on the lakeshore, and the town's food culture shows it. The Alimentarium, a museum dedicated to food and nutrition, sits on the waterfront; just in front of it, a giant stainless steel fork planted in the lake has become one of the most photographed sights on Lake Geneva. The large Grande Place hosts lively regular markets, with wine stalls and regional produce, and is a gathering place in summer.

Charlie Chaplin spent the last part of his life in the neighbouring village of Corsier-sur-Vevey. His former manor house, Chaplin's World, is now a museum combining his home with film sets and memorabilia, and a bronze statue of the actor stands on the lakeside promenade. Vevey is also linked to the Fête des Vignerons, a vast winegrowers' festival held only a few times per century, which celebrates the Lavaux wine tradition.

Walking the town and lakefront

The old town has narrow streets, small squares and independent shops, and the long promenade along the lake leads east towards La Tour-de-Peilz and its castle, which houses a Swiss museum of games. To the west the waterfront continues towards the Lavaux vineyards. A funicular climbs from Vevey to Mont Pèlerin, a residential hill with panoramic views over the lake and the Alps, and a starting point for gentle walks. Several art museums and photography exhibitions complete the cultural offer, and the town has a long-standing interest in images, with a photography festival taking place in its streets in some years.

Architecture enthusiasts can also see the small lakeside house that Le Corbusier designed for his parents at Corseaux, listed by UNESCO as part of his architectural work. In the evenings the waterfront terraces fill up, and the sunset over the lake and the Savoy mountains across the water is a daily spectacle in summer.

Business and stays

Because of the large employers in the area, many visitors arrive for meetings, training sessions or interviews. A chauffeur by the hour (two hours minimum) can link a meeting in Vevey with appointments in Lausanne or Montreux. Accommodation ranges from historic lakeside hotels to apartments and smaller guest houses, and Mont Pèlerin above the town is a quiet option. Companies can book fixed-price transfers for visiting staff and receive an invoice for each trip.

Day trips from Vevey

  • Lavaux: walks and tastings in the UNESCO vineyards just west of town
  • Montreux and Chillon Castle: a few minutes east along the lake
  • Les Pléiades: a gentle summit above Vevey reached by a small railway
  • Gruyères: castle, cheese and medieval streets over the hills

Boat trips on Lake Geneva leave from the Vevey pier in season, including classic paddle steamers that link the villages of the Swiss Riviera and cross to the French shore at Évian.
