Spring lets you combine three seasons in one trip from Geneva Airport: blossoming gardens along Lake Geneva between Lausanne, 61 km away, and Montreux, 91 km; camellias and magnolias around Lake Maggiore in Ticino; and late snow in high resorts such as Zermatt, reached via Täsch, 231 km and 2 h 35 from GVA. A week is ideal, and AirportsTransfers.ch can drive each stage, from airport arrival to the last ski day.
- Season: March to May, depending on altitude and the year
- Stages: Lake Geneva, Ticino (Locarno and Lake Maggiore), a high Valais resort
- Key distances from GVA: Lausanne 61 km, Montreux 91 km, Täsch for Zermatt 231 km / 2 h 35

Lake Geneva in spring
Lake Geneva wakes early: the climate on its northern shore is mild, and spring arrives here weeks before the mountains. Morges, a short drive along the lake, is known for the thousands of tulips that bloom in its lakeside park each spring. In Lausanne, the parks along the Ouchy waterfront and the hillside gardens fill with colour, while the Lavaux vineyards begin to show new green leaves on their terraces. Above Montreux, the hillsides were historically famous for wild narcissus meadows in late spring, which gave them the nickname of May snow. The Château de Chillon, set on a rock in the lake, is especially pretty with spring light on the water and snow still on the peaks behind.
Ticino: camellias and magnolias
From Lake Geneva, the route climbs the Rhône valley and crosses the Simplon into Italy, then follows Lake Maggiore north into Ticino, Switzerland's Italian-speaking canton. Ticino's sheltered, sunny lakes create almost Mediterranean conditions, and in early spring, camellias, magnolias and azaleas bloom in gardens long before the rest of the country. Locarno is home to a camellia park with a large collection of varieties, and the Brissago Islands, reached by boat, have a botanical garden of subtropical plants. Around Lake Lugano, Morcote's terraced gardens and the parks along Lugano's lakefront also burst into flower. On the Italian shore, the Borromean Islands and Villa Taranto open their gardens for the season in spring, showcasing azaleas and rhododendrons.
Spring skiing in the Valais
While the lakes bloom, the high mountains still offer excellent skiing. Spring skiing has its own appeal: long sunny days, softening snow by late morning, lunches on terraces and fewer crowds. High-altitude resorts with glaciers or north-facing slopes keep good snow late in the season. Zermatt, with ski runs reaching high glacier terrain, usually operates well into spring, and Saas-Fee, nearby, is similarly reliable. Verbier, 160 km and 2 h from GVA, also has high terrain on Mont Fort. Plan to ski in the morning when the snow is firm, and enjoy the afternoon sunshine.
Spring also brings practical advantages. Hotels in the lake towns are calmer than in summer, the mountain resorts quieten after the Easter holidays, and the light is clear for photography, with snowy peaks reflected in blue water. Food follows the season too: asparagus appears on menus in the Valais and along the lake, the first lake fish of the year are served in Ticino, and wild garlic grows in the woods. A chauffeur lets you change plans quickly if a sunny day suddenly promises perfect snow or a garden reaches its peak.
Putting the week together
A practical sequence starts with two days on Lake Geneva after landing, then two or three days in Ticino, and ends with two or three days skiing in Zermatt or Saas-Fee before the return to Geneva Airport. This order means you finish in the mountains, so your skis only need to travel for the final part of the trip, or you can rent equipment on site. The reverse order works too, if the snow forecast is better early in your stay.
- Blossom timing varies from year to year; check garden websites before travelling.
- The Simplon Pass is kept open in winter, but spring snow can still make conditions demanding.
- Pack for two climates: light layers for the lakes, warm clothing for the mountains.
