A long tradition of taking the waters
Thermal bathing in Switzerland goes back to Roman times, when soldiers and settlers used hot springs at places such as Baden and Yverdon. In the nineteenth century, spa towns flourished as wealthy travellers came for cures, and grand hotels, promenades and bathhouses were built around the springs. Many of those towns have since reinvented themselves with modern thermal centres, medical clinics and contemporary architecture, while keeping their historic character. Today, visitors come for relaxation as much as for health: a weekend of swimming in warm outdoor pools against a snowy backdrop has become one of the most popular forms of Swiss wellness tourism.
Western Switzerland: Yverdon-les-Bains and Lavey
Yverdon-les-Bains lies at the southern end of Lake Neuchâtel, a little beyond Lausanne (61 km from GVA, about 45 minutes). Its sulphurous water has been used since Roman times, and the town combines a thermal centre with a castle and a pleasant old town; it is easy to reach for a day or an overnight stay. Lavey-les-Bains, in the Rhône valley near Saint-Maurice, beyond Montreux (91 km from GVA, about 1 h 05), is known for notably warm spring water and large outdoor pools beside the river, surrounded by mountains. Both are relaxed rather than glamorous, and suit visitors who want a simple, restorative break close to Geneva.
The Valais: Leukerbad, Saillon and Ovronnaz
The Valais offers spa breaks with a mountain setting. Leukerbad, high in a side valley above the Rhône, is the region's flagship spa: the village is surrounded by sheer limestone cliffs and has several public thermal pools as well as hotel spas, with outdoor basins that are especially atmospheric when snow is falling. It is slightly further up the valley than Crans-Montana (190 km, about 2 h 15). Saillon, near Martigny, has large thermal pools at the foot of a medieval hilltop village, and Ovronnaz, on a sunny plateau above the vineyards, combines thermal baths with walking and skiing. All three can be combined with wine tasting, castles in Sion and visits to Valais villages.
Eastern Switzerland: Bad Ragaz, Baden and Vals
Further east, Bad Ragaz in the Rhine valley near Liechtenstein is one of Switzerland's historic spa resorts, with warm water from the dramatic Tamina gorge, elegant hotels, golf and medical wellness. Baden, near Zurich (280 km from GVA, about 2 h 55), has bathed visitors since Roman times and has a modern thermal bath in its old spa quarter. In the mountains of Graubünden, the stone baths at Vals, designed by the architect Peter Zumthor, are an architectural destination in their own right. These eastern spas are a long drive from Geneva, so they fit more naturally within a longer Swiss tour, combined with Zurich, Lucerne or the Engadin.
Planning a spa trip
Spa towns are often quiet in the evening, so choose your accommodation with care: a hotel with direct access to the thermal pools, or a short walk away, makes a big difference in winter. Weekends and school holidays are busy; midweek visits are calmer. Bring a bathrobe and flip-flops, though many hotels provide them, and book treatments such as massages in advance. Medical spas may require a consultation for certain treatments. For couples, a Business Sedan (Mercedes E-Class) is ideal; for families or friends travelling together, a Van (Mercedes V-Class) carries up to seven people with luggage. Combining two spas, for example Leukerbad and Saillon, is easy with a chauffeur by the hour.
