Sirmione (Lake Garda)
Sirmione is 453 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 4 h 55 by road, with the route crossing the border into Italy and following the motorway past Milan to the southern shore of Lake Garda. The town sits on a slender peninsula reaching several kilometres into the lake, crowned by a moated castle and Roman ruins. AirportsTransfers.ch brings you all the way, which matters here because access to the old centre is restricted.

Reaching Sirmione from Geneva
From Geneva the road heads into the Alps and over to Italy, then runs fast across the Lombard plain, past Milan and Brescia. Leaving the motorway at the Sirmione exit, a short road crosses the flat land to the base of the peninsula. Sirmione has no railway station; the nearest are Desenzano and Peschiera del Garda, from where you would need a bus, taxi or boat to finish the trip.
The final stretch along the peninsula can be slow in high season, as everyone is funnelled onto a single road. Your chauffeur knows the access points and parking rules, and will plan arrival times to avoid the busiest hours when possible.
Getting into the historic centre
The old town at the tip of the peninsula is a limited traffic zone. Entry is controlled at the castle gate, and generally only residents and hotel guests with authorisation may drive in. If your accommodation is inside the zone, let us know when booking and check with the hotel how vehicle access is arranged; otherwise the chauffeur will drop you as close as possible and the centre is a short walk. Hotels outside the walls, along the peninsula road and around Colombare, are reached without restriction.
What to see in Sirmione
The Scaliger Castle guards the entrance to the old town. Built by the della Scala family of Verona, it is surrounded by water and has an unusual fortified harbour; from the walls you look along the peninsula and over the lake. Beyond the castle, lanes lined with shops and gelato counters lead to gardens and lakeside paths.
At the very tip lie the Grottoes of Catullus, the extensive remains of a grand Roman villa set among olive trees, with views across the water to the mountains of the northern lake. Nearby, flat limestone slabs slope into clear shallow water, a popular spot for swimming and sunbathing. Sirmione is also known for its thermal springs, rising from beneath the lake, which feed several spa centres and have attracted visitors for wellness treatments for generations.
Where to stay and day trips
Inside the walls you are close to everything and quiet once the day visitors leave. Along the peninsula, hotels often have their own lake access and gardens, while Colombare and Lugana at the base offer more space and easier driving. Couples on a spa break often choose a hotel with direct access to the thermal facilities.
Boats link Sirmione with Desenzano, Garda, Bardolino and other lake towns. Verona is about forty minutes by car, and the Lugana wine area, famous for its white wines, starts right at the edge of town. Mantua and the theme parks on the eastern shore are other easy outings.
Practical tips
Sirmione is extremely popular from spring to autumn, especially at weekends. Early mornings and evenings are the most peaceful times to stroll the old town. Bring comfortable shoes for the cobbled lanes and rocky shore, and a swimsuit if you plan to use the thermal pools.
Spring and September are particularly pleasant, with mild temperatures and calmer streets, while winter is quiet and some businesses close for the season, though the spas remain a draw. If you are visiting several places around Lake Garda, remember that Sirmione and Desenzano are neighbours on the southern shore, while Riva del Garda lies at the far northern tip, more than an hour away by road. A transfer can be arranged in several legs if you split your stay between the south and the north of the lake, and a return trip to Geneva Airport can be added when you book.
