The drive from Geneva to Kassel
The route runs through Switzerland to Basel, then north on the A5 along the Rhine plain to Frankfurt, and continues through the wooded uplands of Hesse to Kassel, which lies almost in the geographical centre of Germany. The northern part of the journey crosses rolling hills and forests, a pleasant change after the busy Rhine-Main area. Allow a full day of travel with breaks. Because there is no direct rail service from Geneva and connections usually involve several changes, a car can be the simpler choice for families or for anyone carrying artwork, instruments or equipment.
Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe and the Hercules
The Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, on the slopes west of the city, is one of the largest hillside parks in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site. At its summit, the Hercules monument, a huge octagonal structure topped by a copper statue of the hero, looks down a long axis towards the city. From there, a Baroque cascade runs down the hill, and on certain afternoons in the warmer months the historic water features are set in motion: water flows down the cascades, past an artificial ruined aqueduct and waterfalls, and finally rises in a tall fountain in front of the palace, all powered by gravity as it was in the eighteenth century. Following the water down the hill is a highlight of any visit.
Wilhelmshöhe Palace, at the foot of the park, houses an important collection of old master paintings, including works by Rembrandt, and a collection of antiquities. Nearby, the Löwenburg is a mock-medieval castle built as a romantic folly.
The Brothers Grimm and documenta
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm lived and worked in Kassel for many years, collecting and publishing the fairy tales that made them famous. The Grimmwelt museum, on the Weinberg terraces, explores their work on fairy tales, language and the German dictionary in an engaging, interactive way, and their personal copies of the Children's and Household Tales are recognised by UNESCO's Memory of the World programme.
Kassel is also home to documenta, a major exhibition of contemporary art held every five years, which spreads across museums, public spaces and the Fridericianum, one of the oldest public museum buildings in Europe. Several artworks from past editions remain permanently in the city, such as the oak trees with basalt stones planted across Kassel as part of Joseph Beuys's project. Even between editions, the city's art institutions are well worth exploring.
Where to stay
The city centre around the Königsplatz and the Friedrichsplatz is convenient for museums and shops. The Vorderer Westen, a district of elegant late nineteenth-century buildings, is one of the most attractive residential areas and has cafés and restaurants. Staying near Wilhelmshöhe, close to the park and the long-distance railway station, suits visitors who want early access to the Bergpark and fast rail connections. During documenta years, accommodation in and around Kassel is in very high demand.
Day trips from Kassel
Kassel lies on the German Fairy Tale Route, which links places associated with the Grimms' stories. Hann. Münden, where two rivers meet to form the Weser, has a remarkable half-timbered old town. The Reinhardswald forest and Sababurg, often linked with the Sleeping Beauty story, lie to the north. The Edersee, a large reservoir surrounded by a national park of beech forests, offers walking and water sports to the south-west. Göttingen, a lively university town, is also within easy reach.
