Most of Geneva's business hotels are within a 10 to 20 minute drive of the airport outside rush hour, because the airport sits on the edge of the city rather than far out in the countryside. Where you stay depends on where you work: the airport zone for trade fairs, the international district for the UN and missions, the lakefront and the banking district for finance. AirportsTransfers.ch drives executives from the terminal to every one of these districts, and onwards to Lausanne (61 km, about 45 minutes) when needed.
- Airport and Palexpo area: a few minutes from the terminal, practical for short stays and exhibitions
- International district: close to the Palais des Nations and the missions
- Right-bank lakefront: classic grand hotels and easy access to the main station
- Left bank: banking, shopping streets and the old town
- Rush hour: allow extra time on weekday mornings and late afternoons
The airport zone and Palexpo
Several hotels stand directly around the airport and the Palexpo exhibition centre, a short walk or drive from the terminal. They suit travellers on a one-night stay, crew, and exhibitors or visitors to trade fairs, who can reach their stand without crossing the city. The trade-off is atmosphere: this area is functional, and in the evening you will probably want to go into the centre for dinner. Transfers are very short, but during large exhibitions the roads around Palexpo become congested, so even a five-minute hop needs a little planning. For conferences that take place across several days, staying here and travelling into town only for evening engagements is an efficient formula.
The international district
Between the airport and the lake, the international district is home to the United Nations at the Palais des Nations, numerous international organisations and many permanent missions. Hotels here are popular with diplomats, NGO staff and consultants who need to be within walking distance of meetings. The district also borders large parks running down to the lake, pleasant for an early run before a busy day. From the airport, it is usually one of the quickest drives into the city. During high-level meetings, though, security perimeters can affect access to certain streets and hotels, so check with your organiser and give your chauffeur any instructions about entrances.
The lakefront and the station area
The right bank of the lake, along the quays between the Pâquis district and the Mont-Blanc bridge, is lined with grand hotels with views across the water to the Jet d'Eau and, on clear days, Mont Blanc. This is the traditional address for visiting executives and families alike, close to the main railway station (Cornavin) for trains to Lausanne, Bern and Zurich. Behind the lakefront, the Pâquis is lively and multicultural, with plenty of restaurants. Transfers from the airport take around a quarter of an hour in normal traffic, but weekday rush hours and summer events on the quays can lengthen them. Many hotels have limited space for cars to pull up, so a driver familiar with each entrance is useful.
The left bank, banking district and old town
Across the river, the left bank combines Geneva's banking and wealth-management district with the main shopping streets and, on the hill above, the old town around St Peter's Cathedral. Hotels here suit financiers, lawyers and visitors who want to walk to meetings in private banks or family offices. Further along the shore, the Eaux-Vives district and the residential area of Cologny offer quieter, more residential surroundings. Drives from the airport to the left bank cross the river, typically via one of the central bridges, and are a little longer than to the right bank, especially at peak times.
Beyond Geneva: La Côte and Lausanne
Some business travellers stay outside the city, either because their meetings are on La Côte, the stretch of lakeshore between Geneva and Lausanne, or because hotels in Geneva are full during major events. Nyon and Rolle are popular for companies located along the motorway, while Lausanne has its own business hotels and is home to the International Olympic Committee and many sports federations. From Geneva Airport, Lausanne is around 45 minutes by road; staying there is perfectly practical for a meeting in Geneva if transfers are arranged in advance and you avoid the worst of the morning traffic.
