Driving from Geneva to Augsburg

The route runs along the Swiss motorway past Lausanne, Bern and Zurich, then continues towards Lake Constance and into Germany. From there it crosses the gently rolling countryside of Upper Swabia and Allgäu before reaching Augsburg, which sits on the Lech river west of Munich. There are no high Alpine passes on the way, but winter weather can still slow traffic, especially around Zurich and in the Allgäu. Weekday rush hours around Zurich are the main thing to plan around. Most passengers stop once for a break, and families often make two.

A city shaped by Romans, merchants and water

Augsburg was founded under the Roman emperor Augustus, which explains its name. Its golden age came in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, when merchant families such as the Fuggers and Welsers made it one of the great financial centres of Europe. The most famous legacy of that era is the Fuggerei, founded by Jakob Fugger in the early sixteenth century and generally described as the oldest social housing complex in the world still in use. Its neat rows of houses, gates and small museum make it a quiet and fascinating visit.

The Town Hall, a landmark of German Renaissance architecture by Elias Holl, contains the Golden Hall, a richly decorated ceremonial room with a gilded coffered ceiling. Next to it rises the Perlach Tower, which can be climbed for views over the rooftops. The broad Maximilianstrasse, lined with merchant palaces and bronze fountains, leads south to the Basilica of Saints Ulrich and Afra. Augsburg's historic water management system, with canals, water towers and fountains, is inscribed by UNESCO, and walking along the old canals of the Lechviertel artisans' quarter is one of the pleasures of a visit. The city is also linked with the Peace of Augsburg of 1555, with Bertolt Brecht, born here, and with the much-loved Augsburger Puppenkiste puppet theatre.

Neighbourhoods and where to stay

The old town stretches along a ridge from the cathedral in the north to Saints Ulrich and Afra in the south, and staying anywhere along this axis keeps the main sights on foot. The Lechviertel, below the Town Hall, has a village-like feel with small shops and canals. The area near the main station is practical for rail day trips. Business visitors coming for the trade fair grounds, south of the centre, or for the many engineering and manufacturing companies in the region may prefer accommodation with easy road access, which is where a chauffeur by the hour can be useful for a day of meetings.

Day trips from Augsburg

Munich is less than an hour away, so many visitors combine both cities, using Augsburg as a calmer and often less expensive base. Augsburg also lies on the Romantic Road, the scenic route from Würzburg to Füssen. Heading south along it brings you to the Allgäu and to Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles near Füssen, a popular full-day excursion. Families often head to the Legoland park at Günzburg, west of the city. Closer to home, the Augsburg Zoo and the botanical garden make easy half-day outings, and the Lech offers riverside walks and cycling.

Practical tips for your visit

  • Augsburg's centre is compact and served by an efficient tram network.
  • The Christmas market in front of the Town Hall is one of the region's well-known ones, so plan ahead in December.
  • Swabian cooking features Spätzle, Maultaschen and hearty roasts; portions are generous.
  • If you plan to visit Neuschwanstein, reserve castle tickets in advance in busy months.
