The route via Lake Geneva and the Abondance valley
Unlike the resorts reached by the A40, La Chapelle-d'Abondance is approached from the lake. From the airport the route crosses into France and follows the expressway and main road along the southern shore of Lake Geneva towards Thonon-les-Bains. Beyond Thonon the road turns inland and climbs through the Dranse gorges before entering the Abondance valley, passing the town of Abondance and its abbey before reaching La Chapelle. The lakeside section can be slow at rush hour, and the gorge road is narrow and winding in places, which explains why the journey takes longer than the distance suggests. Plan for around an hour and a half on a normal day and more on Saturday afternoons, when traffic heads up the valley to Châtel.
The ski area
La Chapelle-d'Abondance has two main ski sectors on either side of the valley. One rises towards the Crêts Béni and links over the ridge towards Torgon on the Swiss side, while the other connects in the direction of Châtel. Both put you into the Portes du Soleil, the large cross-border domain shared by French and Swiss resorts. The local slopes are uncrowded and well suited to intermediates, with sunny, open runs and wooded sections that help on grey days. Skiing the wider Portes du Soleil circuit from here is possible but involves some distance, so many guests mix quieter days at home with excursions towards Châtel and beyond. Off-piste skiing in the valley should only be done with a qualified guide.
The great advantage of skiing from La Chapelle is time on snow rather than time in queues. Even in the busiest holiday weeks, the local lifts tend to stay calmer than the main hubs of the Portes du Soleil, and lunch on a sunny terrace overlooking the valley is part of the daily rhythm. If your group includes a mix of strong and cautious skiers, the layout makes it easy to split up for the morning and meet again at the village in the afternoon.
Village life and where to stay
This is a working valley with a strong agricultural identity. The Abondance cow, with its distinctive red and white coat, takes its name from here, and the valley produces Abondance cheese. Chalets with carved wooden balconies line the road, and the village has a handsome church with an onion-shaped bell tower. Accommodation ranges from family-run chalets to apartments, and many are within walking distance of a lift or served by a local shuttle. Evenings are peaceful; for more choice of restaurants and shops, Châtel is a short drive up the valley. Non-skiers can enjoy snowshoeing, cross-country loops along the valley floor and visits to the abbey at Abondance.
When to go and practical tips
The season usually runs from late December to the end of March. Because the village sits at a modest altitude, snow cover in the valley can vary, so January to early March tends to be the most reliable period. Avoid arriving in the late afternoon on Saturdays if you can, as the valley road is shared with traffic bound for Châtel. Winter equipment and snow chains are needed in this part of the French Alps. Long skis and boot bags take up more space than people expect, so give accurate numbers when booking.
Planning the return to GVA
Allow at least three hours between leaving La Chapelle and your flight time on a winter weekend, and add a margin if snow is forecast. The lake road around Thonon and the approach to Geneva are the usual pinch points. Early departures are much quieter, so a dawn pick-up for a morning flight is often quick and stress-free.
